stipa / archetech: serious answer: I was thinking of doing network booting for fun, but with 0.5ms on each file I/O operation... yeaaah

<Tonymac32> That won't be how it works out, it isn't 1:1 disk I/I to network I/I 😀
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> Erm, I/O

<dave> oh I know it'll be worse
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> but the starting point of 0.5ms is pretty bad.

<DaMiBear> Hello everyone😀 , I am new to armbian. According to the tutorial, I have successfully compiled the ubuntu system image of rock3a. According to my current understanding, compiling linux drivers requires the corresponding linux kernel source code. I went to "build/cache/sources/linux-mainline/linux-5.19.y" and found that this seems to be original kernel. If I want to build my own linux driver, what should I do ?

<Werner> You're correct. These are stock kernel sources which within the building process will be patched against the patch series according to the selected board.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> I don't know if you want to have them pre-built in or simply build a random driver on your board at runtime but if it is latter simply install the Linux source packages - which you will find in output/debs folder - on your board.

Manouchehri: you can have such latency if your office is in backyard

stipa: eh, tbh I still feel like it should be lower, it doesn't have to cross that many switches :p

Manouchehri: try to connect your office with wifi, you would be thankful for 0.5 ms of latency via ethernet
<stipa>
i get around 0.3-0.4 ms on half of meter of cable
<stipa>
2 meters, i lied
<stipa>
but the speed is fine
<stipa>
i mean, amount of data trasnfer per second

<dave> so to update u-boot, all I need to do is update linux-u-boot-nanopi-r4s-edge, no?
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> no
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> you need to go to armbian-install and run "update boot loader"
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> hmm, it still looks like it's my older build from Oct 14 2022 that's being booted
<yang2>
stipa: when I was testing I had 2ms from one ISP to another ISP in the city distance of about 3-5 kilometres
<yang2>
not sure how the cabling goes
<yang2>
but it was on the other side of the town, and it went fiber to fiber
<stipa>
only optics can do that
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> alright got serial working
<yang2>
stipa: I think that the connection even went over IX
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> optics have higher latency than DACs on average afaik
<yang2>
so the actual cabling was likely 10 km or so
<yang2>
well if you want a really precise measurement, the "ping" is not good enough
<yang2>
the other side can have hardware delay and so on
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> @yang2: my country did not have a local exchange until about a year ago, so all local traffic between ISPs would go through Miami and back lol.
<yang2>
FL ?
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> yeah, Miami FL
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> I live in Grand Cayman
<stipa>
you guys are taking about stuff as fast as backbones are
<yang2>
dave, that's nice
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> my inter-island latency went from like 50-60ms down to 1-3ms.
<stipa>
but, you can't go faster than light
<yang2>
dave, I am curious how many ISP's do the Cayman islands have?
<nekomancer[m]>
nobody use local traffic in 21st century.
<nekomancer[m]>
only pirates.
<stipa>
brazil does
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> Three. Only one (C&W) has access to the internet though, everyone else has to use them for upstream
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> C&W has two cables, one is their part of MAYA-1 (goes to Miami), and the other goes to Jamaica. They don't seem to ever route traffic properly to Jamaica, I think it's just a failover or something. (Traffic to Jamaica goes to Miami and back stupidly.)
<yang2>
yeah weird, that adds a lot of latency
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> tbh they probably have zero big business customers they care about latency to Jamaica.
<yang2>
Do you have fiber on the islands?
<stipa>
dave, what's the ping to jamaica from you rn
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> yeah, I have three fiber connections in my office building, and one fiber connection at the condo
<stipa>
1000 km air distance
<stipa>
2000 km fro a signal to come back
<yang2>
that would be around 10 ms
<stipa>
and there's cuba in the middle
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> stipa: 60ms from Grand Cayman to Jamaica (Netflix co-hosted server test target)
<stipa>
so, could be they're splitting the signal with silicon
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> yeah if I ever have a spare $10 to $30 mil, I want to run a fibre cable from Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac, and Cayman Brac to Trinidad Cuba.
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> and if I have >$100 mil to spend: Grand Cayman to Cancun, Cancun to Freeport (Texas).
<stipa>
i get 30ms just from my modem to a 4G tower
Malditron has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<stipa>
i sense like 10mS of added latency from 100km further
<stipa>
so, 4G adds 30mS + what internet adds
<yang2>
4G latency probably varies
<stipa>
i dunno, with my setup it's like that
<stipa>
i haven't tried others, next would be 5G or fibre, or both
<stipa>
fibre is promoted heavily around me
<stipa>
they're fighting for the costumers
<stipa>
like, knocking on the doors type of sales
<stipa>
i think even my hometown has fibre now
<stipa>
it's like in the middle of nowhere
<stipa>
there 4G is at max the modem provides, like 60Mbs
<stipa>
at capital it's like 18
<stipa>
probably due everyone having it on phones
<stipa>
for my needs it's ok
<stipa>
i was even fine with 256Kbs ADSL
<yang2>
stipa: some places have to pay a lot of money to get fiber built, so if they offer you for free, grab it :)
<nekomancer[m]>
starlink wants you
<stipa>
yang2: i guess the fibre in my hometown goes over ground, via power columns
<stipa>
via electricity grid columns
<yang2>
ok
<stipa>
not sure
<stipa>
so no digging and stuff
<yang2>
that's still good enough
<stipa>
yeah, should ask around for the ping
<stipa>
i lost contact with everybody
<stipa>
nekomancer[m]: do you have starlink?
<stipa>
"Starlink ping has been measured as low as 20 ms"
<nekomancer[m]>
no
* nekomancer[m]
living in big EU city and have 200 MBit ethernet connection
<stipa>
enough for retirement needs
<nekomancer[m]>
more than enough.
