<hush> hi folks, I'm trying to build river on gentoo and I keep getting this error: https://dpaste.com/4MG8AGDGW
<hush> eiter using the ebuild in wayland-desktop repo (so through emerge) or trying to build it via the zig command after git-cloning the sources
<leon-p> which zig version do you use?
<lordmzte> looks like youre using the wrong version of zig. you need 0.9.1
<hush> zig version is 0.10
<hush> mkay
<lordmzte> i wonder tho, is river being ported to 0.10.0 considering its the current stable version of zig?
<tleydxdy[m]> my guess is at least 0.10.1
<hush> there is no 0.9.1 ebuild anymore on gentoo :( That means I'll have to wait for 0.10 support
<leon-p> hush: yes, river will be ported, but that may take some time. In the meantime however you can grab a statically compiled zig binary from the zig website

<hush> I don't think it'll work on gentoo but let me try
alebastr has joined #river
<lordmzte> its not like gentoo cant run things you didnt compile yourself :P
<hush> kindof
<hush> except it didn't compile ITself :D
<hush> not being a binary distro it means it looks for links and deps all over the fs and it's not just a matter of swapping a file in /usr/bin with another
<lordmzte> you dont technically need to install it. you could just download it somewhere and run the binary there
<lordmzte> and even tho i dont have a clue about how gentoo works, im sure you could package 0.9.1 properly.
<leon-p> FWIW I just dump the zig tarballs into a directory in my ~ and create aliases for the binaries, i.e. zig9 / zig10
<hush> I tried the easy was, just copyig the file in /usr/bin, didn't work -> error: unable to find zig installation directory '/usr/bin/zig': FileNotFound
<hush> the only way I suppose should be to write an ebuild properly like
<hush> I'll maybe try that tomorrow
<leon-p> try just running it from inside the unpacked tarball without moving it
<tleydxdy[m]> pretty sure you can just find the old ebuild from git
<hush> what git? zig git?
<tleydxdy[m]> gentoo
<hush> never looked into the archives, maybe that's a better idea
groknull has joined #river
<hush> yeah you can ask for a specific version but if there's no ebuild you're stuck
<tleydxdy[m]> fun
<hush> at least I found out there was zig-bin and so I wasted $TIME compiling it (twice) for nothing lol
<leon-p> compiling compilers is not fun
<hush> try that with llvm, you'll switch to fecking ubuntu instead :D
<tleydxdy[m]> imagine now having an epyc
<hush>
<leon-p> any other pentium users here? no?
<hush> lmao
<hush> athlon?
<leon-p> thinkpad x200. at least for on the go. at home is some sad amd office thingy

<leon-p> got both for 50€ each, incidentally.
<lordmzte> almost. im currently suffering an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
<hush> can-t say no to (semi) free hardware can-t ya?
<leon-p> especially if the processor is technically more expensive than that, yes
<leon-p> there were even more of those on sale, but I had to carry it through the entire city, so I only got the one I actually needed

<hush> those were the days. First time I installed gentoo it took me 2.5 days to get it bootstrapped. That means to have a bootable shell. KDE? more like another week
<hush> now that we have 128 cores at 5ghz... I switched to tiling wms lol
alexherbo2 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<hush> anyway, I'll get this river flowing soon. Cot's calling now so... o/
<leon-p> o/

<NickH> I sure hope river stays compatible with zig 0.9.1 for a while. I can't get stage3 of zig 0.10.0 to build yet.
