I think there's a mistake in Bare Bones wiki page. It says "In case the terminal is filled up, it will just go back to the top of the screen." but this is not the case with the implementation provided. It never goes back to the top of the screen, it just keeps writing to memory addresses that are not rendered.

on armv7, is there a way to check, by asm, if i am in secure mode ?
<jafarlihi>
moon-child: You are right, my \n implementation was just breaking it.
<kazinsal>
the whole "bare bones" series of tutorials should probably be on a redo to-do list
<kazinsal>
some pretty gnarly awful stuff in there

kazinsal: bare-bones should actually be renamed "Bare bones (POSIX)" because of all the posix userland basics that are included... which doesn't help anyone for a non-posix userland base target

GDT is hard to understand :)
<geist>
it's a bit of a wall of info at first
<geist>
i can tell you it gets easier, but there is a lot of infos initially snce the GDT is where a lot of various concept (rings, permission levels, segments, etc) all come together

I need to figure out how to get Matrix to properly Identify me to libera :/ It really doesn't like it.
<chibill[m]>
Its annoying getting kicked from the channel now and then.
<Bitweasil>
No idea, I don't use the matrix bridge.
<Bitweasil>
IRC and personal chat are separate.
<Bitweasil>
I tried merging them for a while and, nah. IRC is worktime.
<Bitweasil>
Matrix is personal stuff.

you use irc for work?
<Bitweasil>
(1) Yes. (2) I'm on here during work hours, typically.
<moon-child>
that is nice

uses slack. There was some talk of switching to irc, but it never went anywhere

irc is good for internal critical stuff that depends on the least amount of infrastructure to comms
<geist>
like during emergency like stuff
<geist>
or at least better than something that relies on a whole pile of infrastructure
<junon>
unless you wipe out your routing records
* junon
looks at facebook
<geist>
yeah but that hoses no matter what you do, it's the least amount
<junon>
geist maybe you can't talk about it but how much did the facebook outage affect google? Anything notable?
<geist>
no idea, for reals
<geist>
i actually wonder if there was a spike or whatnot, but couldn't tell you if i knew, but would be interesting
<zid>
Internet stopped being decentralized a long time ago
<junon>
yeah it would
<zid>
now it's call CDNs and stuff
<zid>
just have to deal with it
<junon>
depends on your definition of "centralized"
<junon>
if you mean in the defi sense, the internet is entirely centralized lol
<moon-child>
was the internet ever decentralised?

Outside DNS root nameservers, the 90s and early 2000s were pretty scattered.
<kazinsal>
unfortunately the circa 2021 definition of "decentralized" means "operated by people who are into cryptocurrency or otherwise cannot legally be within 500 feet of schools"
<Bitweasil>
I don't think that's true at all. That's the cryptocurrency realm, but you can still have small web communities, running on single servers, etc, and not using the mainline infrastructure.
<Bitweasil>
I'm not sure how "centralized" I'd consider "using a CDN on your own box" to be, though using cloud servers certainly qualifies.
<Bitweasil>
aws-east-1 goes down, half the internet dies.
<Bitweasil>
That's a problem.
