< zoq> rcurtin: I'm wondering if you used a real 12 core CPU for the test: https://github.com/mlpack/mlpack/pull/681#issuecomment-232387968?
< rcurtin> ◈ ryan@humungus ☃ dataset_split ◈ $ grep 'model name' /proc/cpuinfo
< rcurtin> model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz
< rcurtin> and it has two of those, so total 16 cores (32 threads)

< zoq> rcurtin: I'm wondering if it makes a huge difference if you only build with 8 instead of 12.

< rcurtin> zoq: let's see...
< rcurtin> real 4m36.960s
< rcurtin> so about 150% as long as with 12 cores
< zoq> interesting, thanks for the test
< rcurtin> I think that if I built with more than 16, I would see less speedup... actually, I am curious, so let me run that
< rcurtin> I am glad I am not paying the power bill for that system :)
< zoq> I hope the same applies for cabbie.
< zoq> :)
< rcurtin> yeah, all of it is on symantec, so nothing out of pocket :)
< rcurtin> building with 16 cores actually is slower than building with 12:
< rcurtin> real 3m28.793s
< rcurtin> that is probably because a few cores are running screensavers and other background processes
< zoq> building mlpack in about 4 minutes is really impressive
< rcurtin> 24 cores gets minor speedup:
< rcurtin> real 3m0.946s
< rcurtin> yeah, it is nice to be able to build that fast... but maybe the better thing would be if the build did not take so long to begin with :)
< zoq> I agree, I've seen #722 but haven't had time to response.
