<midfavila> i've been buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusy
<midfavila> still wrapping up the move
<midfavila> just got my first professional certification like, a week ago
<midfavila> etc
<midfavila> how've you been sad_plan?
<sad_plan> awesome
<sad_plan> ive been good. I recently switched to oasis, but with kiss. im still running the same setup, but using oasis as a base, as opposed to a kiss tarball
<midfavila> neat
<midfavila> i'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
<midfavila> still on slackware
<midfavila> lmao
<midfavila> i'm going to switch back to KISS once my desktop arrives from N.B. though
<sad_plan> lol, thought you switched back after a bit
<sad_plan> nice
<midfavila> kinda flipflopped
<sad_plan> I get that
<midfavila> can't really run it rn because i technically don't have internet at my apartment
<midfavila> not to mention i'm stuck using a fifteen or so year old laptop
<sad_plan> thats rather inconvinent to say the least
<midfavila> (i'm piggybacking off a public hotspot rn)
<midfavila> (performance is suboptimal)
<sad_plan> I see
<midfavila> but yeah once i have my PC set back up i'll at least be able to sneakernet packages from work back home
<sad_plan> thats a start atleast
<midfavila> tbh it'll cover most of what i need
<midfavila> i only have a few massive packages
<midfavila> llvm, mesa, linux, etc
<midfavila> i guess emacs
<sad_plan> I was gonna say palemoon and gcc, but I suppose kernel and llvm is of significant size aswell
<sad_plan> how big is emacs anyway? on your current system
<midfavila> gcc and palemoon aren't really in the books
<midfavila> well, gcc might still be
<midfavila> but palemoon isn't
<midfavila> emacs... let me check
<sad_plan> I see. what do you use instead? still only links?
<midfavila> eww
<midfavila> i'm one of those people now
<sad_plan> firefox? :P
<midfavila> eww
<midfavila> editing macros web wowser
<sad_plan> what?
<midfavila> emacs' browser
<sad_plan> oh
<sad_plan> right
<midfavila> also emacs 27.2 on slackware 15 is 169mb on disk
<sad_plan> damn
<sad_plan> does the browser suck though? or does it suffice for your usage?
<midfavila> it's better than links by a long shot
<sad_plan> not supprised :p
<midfavila> i was using links before because i just kind of had it slapped together
<sad_plan> I see
<midfavila> and i was still kind of held up on muh yoonix philosophy
<midfavila> but i don't really care that much about it any more, at least in the context of emacs
<sad_plan> I see. gotta comprimise somewhere
<midfavila> once i have the ability to actually implement my own editor maybe i'll care again but that's a long time off
<midfavila> i haven't actually done any real programming in like a year
<midfavila> year and a half
<midfavila> thereabouts
<sad_plan> what would your editor look like? and wouldnt it be better to use something that already exist, or fork something?
<sad_plan> less work atleast
<sad_plan> by look like, I mean what features would you aim for
<midfavila> i mean honestly emacs is a good start, UX-wise
<midfavila> just make emacs an OS and scheme-based instead and i'd be really happy with that
<midfavila> but if we're talking just an editor, i'd still like to make my own version of something like se
<midfavila> i use this a lot
<midfavila> i'm a big fan of ed unironically
<midfavila> but tbqh in terms of concrete ideas i haven't got a clue any more
<midfavila> i haven't bothered thinking about that stuff in ages
<midfavila> too busy
<sad_plan> right. never really liked ed, as I like having visuals. but im sure I could get used to it aswell for smaller stuff
<sad_plan> I get that
<midfavila> that's why i like se
<midfavila> for longer editing sessions se is great because you still get visual feedback
<midfavila> but also
<midfavila> like
<midfavila> .-15,.+15p
<sad_plan> can you actually see the content of the file in its whole? like with vi
<midfavila> yes
<midfavila> it's like vi but inside out
<midfavila> i guess?
<midfavila> it's weird
<sad_plan> lol
<midfavila> a very literal adaption of ed to a graphics mode
<midfavila> that's for sure
<midfavila> i guess my first goal would be to create a SUS-compliant implementation of ed that's just super clean
<sad_plan> its a start I guess. I like vis though. been using it for quite some time now actually
<midfavila> then once that's done add a line editing library
<midfavila> then go from there
<midfavila> i think i tried vis
<sad_plan> not your cup of tea? ive mentioned you dont like vi generally
<midfavila> yeah i kind of sort of despise vi lmao
<midfavila> it's clunky as shit
<midfavila> vi keys are super uncomfortable
<midfavila> and command-based editing is much more powerful than line-based editing, and vi has always felt like it prioritizes line editing over command editing
<sad_plan> I like it. I was using vim before, but vis' multicursor was a real gamechanger for me. so it stuck with me really
<midfavila> se is the opposite of vi in that sense so
<sad_plan> vis does have commands though, but maybe not as many as youd like? or missing lots of them
<sad_plan> I see
<midfavila> don't recall vis, but i like ed's command language because it's simple and orthogonal
<midfavila> you've got a handful of commands and some simple flow control structures and by combining those you can get plenty of stuff done quickly and easily
<sad_plan> hm. I see
<midfavila> okay well,
<midfavila> i'm gonna brb
<midfavila> i need to get my dr pepper zero fix
<midfavila> my new apartment is above a corner store and they know exactly what they're doing
<sad_plan> been a really long time since ive heard people drink that stuff
<sad_plan> decent
<midfavila> i drink a shitload of pepper zero
<midfavila> like 2gal plus a week
<midfavila> an unironic addiction
<midfavila> it's so fucking goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood

<icebarf_> sewn: what you been using currently?
<sewn> alpine
<icebarf_> i see
<icebarf_> im trying to work with flatpak, trying out vscode on kiss
<icebarf_> dbus form kiss-dbus (community repo) was fairly easy to setup
<icebarf_> apparently "portal does not support export-pids" is the main PITA for me now
<icebarf_> (oof that apparently is misplaced)
<icebarf_> anyway, i grepped around the sources for zypak and flatpak but didn't see anything of use (almost midnight for me rn)
<icebarf_> so maybe ill have a look tomorrow
<icebarf_> sewn: hbu? what are you working on?
<sewn> working on what
<icebarf_> yeah, working on what?
<icebarf_> like anything
