Hi davidlt
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
I want to experiment with building Rocky packages. To start, I need at least Fedora so I can compile pkgs.
<
davidlt[m]>
You can chroot into Fedora 37 rootfs.
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
How do
_you_ recommend I get started using QEMU? (I have a board but no "proper" image is available)
<
davidlt[m]>
You can do that with QEMU too.

<
davidlt[m]>
The largest VM I attempted was 32-cores 80GB RAM.
<
davidlt[m]>
We don't support more than 32-core CPUs on QEMU (right now, might change to 120+ or so in mid-future)
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
I meant a full fledged VM... The images aren't the most up-to-date :(
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
The last image is of F37 but it doesn't have the uboot/sbi firmware related to it
<
davidlt[m]>
This is the most up to date for us right now.
<
davidlt[m]>
Instructions show how to acquire all relevant firmware bits for QEMU.
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
I'll have a look, thanks! :D
<
davidlt[m]>
Once you boot you basically install rocky*-release, generic-release, rocky-rpm-config (if such exist), and you are basically good to go.
<
davidlt[m]>
At that point you want to pull SRPMs from @core group and start rebuilding them.
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
Oh no no, Rocky has 0 riscv packages as of now. It's a literal fresh start 😅
<
davidlt[m]>
Star small like zlib, xz, gzip, tar, leading to libarchve, going towards rpm, etc.
<
davidlt[m]>
They have been experimenting. I just don't know if any of that was public, IRC, or private.
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
There is a mock cfg file but other than that, I don't think so
<
davidlt[m]>
You might want to coordinate with neil from Rocky Linux on bootstrapping.
<
neil>
it's all public in #rockylinux-sig-altarch on Libera (should be accessible from Matrix)
<
neil>
PrathamPatel[m] 👆
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
Yep, I'm in the mattermost chat :D
<
davidlt[m]>
Maybe I should join that one too.
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
xd
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
* XD
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
On a side note, what would I need to do to convince that Fedora users in India do exist?
<
davidlt[m]>
Oh, there was a channel on Matrix thus I didn't to use the IRC bridge.
<
cwt[m]>
Is there anyone talking about porting Oracle Linux to riscv yet?
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
I can hardly get 100KB/s but once I connect to usa via VPN, it works at 200Mbit/s
<
davidlt[m]>
cwt: to my knowledge no.
<
PrathamPatel[m]>
cwt[m]: Oracle Linux is downstream of RHEL, so I don't think that will happen before Rocky/Red Hat does something
<
neil>
davidlt[m] i think that should be the same channel, at least, i think our matrix and irc namespaces are merged or whatever it's called
<
cwt[m]>
PrathamPatel[m]: I'm a big fan of its UEK kernel, especially Oracle Linux still be able to use btrfs via UEK

<
neil>
I highly doubt there are a lot of people at Oracle staring at riscv at this time
<
neil>
and having risc-v supporting in their UEK is probably a long long way off
<
davidlt[m]>
Pretty much everything is blocked by a proper hardware :)
<
cwt[m]>
Is there any EL downstream that re-enables btrfs?
<
neil>
i think centos stream hyperscale sig supports it
