zorz: SiFuh: I got the soundcard working again. It must have been a timing issue. I needed to delay `modprobe snd_sof_pci_intel_icl` until *after* the i915 module had loaded its firmware.
<zorz>
ok!
<zorz>

zorz: I wonder why I had so many successful reboots without needing to insert a delay for the i915 firmware loading. None of the updates applied on June 21 should have changed the startup sequence so drastically.
<farkuhar>
Well, there was the update of rdfind (a dependency of linux-firmware). Maybe the new rdfind is slower to navigate /lib/firmware, and that's why the i915 module now takes longer to complete its initialization.
<farkuhar>
One workaround might be to edit /etc/rc.modules and insert a `sleep 10` after the modprobe of i915. Or I could defer `modprobe snd_sof_pci_intel_icl` until /etc/rc.fix (which should run late enough in the boot sequence, so that the i915 firmware will have finished loading).
<zorz>
i think sleep 10
<zorz>
i had this in my crux rc.modules long time ago /sbin/modprobe snd_mixer_oss
<zorz>
sleep 10 && /sbin/modprobe snd_bla_bla
<zorz>
its pity you cannot run openbsd. in linux you will have always problems like this one.
<farkuhar>
Oh, I certainly *can* run OpenBSD on that device. I would just have to invest in new hardware (like the Creative Bluetooth dongle that SiFuh mentioned), because OpenBSD has no native support for bluetooth or SoundOpenFirmware.
<zorz>
aahhh ok i see
<farkuhar>
So I went with the OS that has native support for the existing hardware, rather than enlarge my collection of eventual e-waste with yet another dongle (or set of headphones).
<zorz>
correct.
