lol @ am572x erratum i940 => "After several hundred days (specific duration depends on SYS_CLK1 frequency) of continuous operation the MPU COUNTER_REALTIME saturates at 0xBB8000000000 and no longer generates interrupts. There is no way to reset the counter except for a system reset."
<zmatt>
how on earth did whoever designed this "master counter" not take wrapping behaviour into consideration

Greetings. New AI-64 owner. Not very familiar with current Linux. Just got my fan today so I am setting up my BB. How do I get my ethernet to dhcp an address?
<zmatt>
it should do so by default
<zmatt>
like, your phrasing is a bit confusing but I assume you mean you want the AI-64's to use dhcp to obtain an address for its ethernet interface
<zmatt>
if so, that's the default config
<AlexBB>
It doesn't show an IP under the interface ifconfig... maybe bad cable checking it out
<zmatt>
does it have link up?
<zmatt>
note btw that ifconfig is a long-deprecated utility, the "ip" utility replaces it, e.g. "ip addr" to show the configuration of all interfaces, or "ip -brief addr" for a concise output
<AlexBB>
Ok thanks for that. Many years ago I used to run *bsd systems so I have a lot to catch up on
<AlexBB>
up but no-carrier. It might be this cord. I was able to use the BB networking via USB but since I am currently powering the BB via USB I was hoping to get ethernet up to do my initial setup.
<zmatt>
so how are you logged in right now, serial?
<AlexBB>
HDMI/usb dongle keyboard/mouse
<zmatt>
ah right I sometimes forget that's a thing
<AlexBB>
I actually have an HDMI input port on my laptop haha I never thought I would use that.
<zmatt>
and the "UP" inside the flags (<...>) in the long "ip addr" output just means the interface is _administratively_ up, i.e. it's requested to be up (but the "NO-CARRIER" means there's no link)
<zmatt>
cable would indeed be the first suspect
<AlexBB>
Yeah I thought so. Thank you for the help. I need to run to the store I will be back.

<zmatt>
also, you shouldn't even need to use a command to check for link, there's a link light on the ethernet connector
<zmatt>
(based on the schematic it seems the link light should be yellow and the activity light green, which if true would be the exact opposite of how every other device on the planet would use those leds :P )

What MicroSD brands/ratings/sizes are recommended?

AlexBB: why would there be AI-64-specific recommendations for that?
<zmatt>
especially without stating a particular usage for the card
<zmatt>
size: whatever is big enough for your intended use-case

<zmatt>
speed rating: the AI-64's sd card interface is limited to UHS-I (SDR104) so don't bother spending more money on a uhs-ii or uhs-iii card. though write speed is usually not limited by the bus speed anyway
<zmatt>
the read performance of the on-board eMMC storage should easily outperform any sd card
