<Guest10> Hi.. BB Black noob here. Having trouble with first time start up. I'm running WIndows10 and Windows Subsystem for linux 2
<Guest10> Plugged in the BBB via USB and it connected as drive I; with limited/(no?) to the linux file system
<Guest10> Plugged in a Ethernet cable and now have IP 192.186.1.142
<Guest10> Loging in there like "ssh debian@192.168.1.142" and using password temppwd but getting "bone-debian-10.3-console-armhf-2020-04-06-1gb.img" ... EOT
<Guest10> Sorry bad cut/paste. Here comes that errorr msg ...
<Guest10> "Permission denied, please try again"
<Guest10> I've now lost track of where I found those instructions, but looking in the history here, that debian:temppwd does seem to be a thing
<Guest10> EOT!
<Guest10> Going to walk the dog for 15 mins or so. Let me know if you need further details.
<Guest10> (accepted the prompt from ssh "Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no/[fingerprint])? yes"
<Guest10> No luck with 192.168.6.2 or 192.168.7.2
<Guest10> That is to say, no connection at all with those 2 IPs
vagrantc has quit [Quit: leaving]
<zmatt> Guest10: "Plugged in a Ethernet cable and now have IP 192.186.1.142" do you mean the beaglebone has that IP, how did you determine that?
<zmatt> try ssh debian@beaglebone.local
<zmatt> 192.168.7.2 *ought* to work on windows, though Microsoft loves to periodically break RNDIS somehow
<zmatt> (and they never implemented the usb standard protocols for ethernet-over-usb)
<zmatt> the "permission denied" makes me wonder if you tried to connect to your own ip rather than the beaglebone's :P
<Guest10> I found the IP for BBB via my Router's "Devices" List. You click on the BeagleBone link and it showed that IP address. I know what the IP for my laptop is, and it's .140. Tnx for looking at this...

<Guest10> I'll also mention that I did make an SD card and install it. I used the bone-debian-10.3-console-armhf-2020-04-06-1gb.img.xz and balenaEtcher to install it.
<Guest10> In my reading over the last 2-3 days regarding BBB I think I  understand that there is some version of an OS installed on an internal eMMC card. Does that sound right?
<zmatt> you can boot from eMMC or from SD card yes, typically you'd boot from eMMC
<zmatt> though it should prefer booting from sd card
<zmatt> (if a bootable sd card is present)
<Guest10> 2 issues over all here, 1) really want ssh access to std linux enviroment installed to SD card but 2) was surrpozed that using USB cable to Windows 10 brought up a FileExplorer attached to the "I:" drive with some files and Folders visible (but not really linux).
<zmatt> yeah that's just a disk image
<zmatt> read-only
<Guest10> Is 2) what is on the eMMC ?
<zmatt> normally the latest official IoT image
<zmatt> (unless the beaglebone is ancient or has been lying on a shelf for a very long time)
<Guest10> Err, on the shelf 3-4 years now. How could I find a version number?
<zmatt> by booting from eMMC and then logging in :P
<zmatt> but if you don't know what's on eMMC or how old it might be I'd just suggest reflashing
<Guest10> So take the SD card out, restart and see what happens?
<zmatt> though the mystery of why you can't log in might have a higher priority
<Guest10> "can't  log in priority" , yes, but if I can bootstrap getting to that via using the eMMC version, seems less risky.
<Guest10> I'm going to remove SD card reboot and see what happens.
<zmatt> I wonder if it's possible it's not actually booting from sd card and whatever is on eMMC is so ancient that the login/password isn't debian/temppwd ? or, was the beaglebone previously used? could the pasword have been changed some time in the past?
<zmatt> I'm not sure what you mean by that
<Guest10> hard to  know about your first question , (and I agree that it is a mystery), so going to remove SD card from the situation and see if anything changes
<Guest10> back a a min or two (I hope)
<zmatt> you can also try bypassing the bootloader on eMMC to force it to use the one on the sd card, that can help in case eMMC is so ancient or weird that it can't boot from the linux system on sd card. this is done by holding the S2 button (the button closest to the SD card slot) while applying power (you can let go of the button once the power led turns on)
<zmatt> (by default bootrom prefers loading u-boot (the bootloader) from eMMC over SD, and then u-boot (as least the one on beagleboard.org images) prefers loading linux from SD card over eMMC)
<Guest10> BBB still boots from USB to Windows10 and brings up a file explorer. Noticed the ID.txt file listed, that contins "BeagleBoard.org Debian Image 2015-11-12"
<Guest10> BUT the IP changed from 196,198.1.142 to 144 AND can't ssh to debian@192..
<zmatt> 2015, now that's a museum-piece
<Guest10> So will now try bypassing bootloader. Let me reread you comment above and make sure I understand what to do.
<Guest10> 2015!? not in my tech collection (-;!

<zmatt> must be one of the earliest debian bbb images.... debian for the bbb was _announced_ in 2014
<zmatt> do you know the hardware revision? like, is there a sticker with something like "A5A" or similar?
<Guest10> OK, used the S2 button while interesting pwer. Blue lights blinkg pretty much as before
<Guest10> Getting different status messages from Win10. but they disappear too fast
<Guest10> No Explorer popping up. Let me see if I have an 192.168.1.* address from my routher
<zmatt> 192.168.7.2 might now also work (via usb)
<zmatt> or hmm actually maybe that's not setup in the console image
<zmatt> I'm not 100% sure
<zmatt> ethernet should certainly work... and you *should* be able to find it using multicast dns (i.e. ssh debian@beaglebone.local )
<zmatt> (as long as Windows doesn't think your ethernet is a "Public network" which disables mDNS and other local network discovery stuff)
<Guest10> The router shows 192.168.1.144 still for BB. Can't ssh to that (no connection at all)
<Guest10> Will try BBB.local
<Guest10> nope: "ssh: Could not resolve hostname beaglebone.local"
<Guest10> will try 7.2
<zmatt> that makes it difficult to guess what's going on :/ like, plugging into ethernet should normally definitely work
<zmatt> 7.2 only makes sense to try if the beaglebone actually showed up as network interface on your pc
<Guest10> Ok 7.2 worked. ... But pretty sure that is thru the Win10/USB. I'm going to get my 5V 2A power spply and see what  happens w that
<zmatt> now that you're logged in maybe check what's going on with its ethernet
<zmatt> and consider wiping eMMC using sudo blkdiscard /dev/mmcblk1 that way you don't have to mess with the S2 button on subsequent boots or worry about the ancient bootloader on eMMC
<zmatt> you'll probably want to flash the system on sd card to eMMC but that's not the highest priority
<zmatt> btw, if you want a more recent system than a debian buster from 2020, you can find a recent debian bullseye image here (the "console" image got renamed to "minimal"): https://forum.beagleboard.org/t/debian-11-x-bullseye-monthly-snapshots/31280#debian-11x-bullseye-minimal-snapshot-11
<Guest10> Arg realized I didn't have my LAN cable plugged in the 7.2 worked because it was the only one, but it was nice. It also prompted with debian:temppwd in plain site as part of the login screen (-;
<zmatt> yeah lol
<zmatt> still weird that beaglebone.local didn't work... unless that image you've got right now doesn't include avahi-daemon, that would be unfortunate
<zmatt> pretty sure the debian bullseye (11.x) minimal image does include it
<Guest10> Well this is denintely progress. I have some great advice from you THANK YOU VERY MUCH! ... I'll play with this some more and if I get stuck OR resolved I'll let you know what happened. I may not finish tonight, have to get an ealy start tomorrow. Will also try for ssh ... .local too. Thanks!!! (I may put some more on here now, but trying not to be
<Guest10> a time sink for you, feel free to ignore!) Thanks!!!
<zmatt> you're welcome
