Hmm, new images of Armbian for my OrangePi5+ seem to suggest Kernel 6.7 (edge_6.7.0_rc1), but on my current installation with linux-image-legacy-rk35xx, linux-image-edge-rk35xx would still install 6.1.11-rk35xx.
<Treibholz>
Is linux-image-edge-rockchip-rk3588 now the "right one" for the OPi5+?
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> Yes
<Treibholz>
OK, I'll try. thanks.
<Treibholz>
argh, /boot is too small for two kernels+initrds, need to change the compression for initramfs to xz, so both fit.
popolon has joined #armbian
<Treibholz>
nah, still too small.
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> Xz is pretty slow. I use zstd for compression mostly
<DC-IRC>
<efectn> Or i don't compress
<Treibholz>
yes, zstd is fast, but most of the time not much smaller than gz. My problem is /boot has only 256MB and that's just too small for two kernels, initrds and dtbs. doesn't help, because the dtb of the legacy kernel is huge. I'll just try the edge kernel now and if it doesn't work, I'll boot from the sdcard and rollback on the nvme.

Nope, had to roll back. My user_overlay to control my fan on PWM14 doesn't work anymore. And then the fan runs on full speed all the time. The CPU will freeze :-)
<Treibholz>
So, migrating to the new kernel seems to be a bit more work for me, let's see if I have time on the weekend.

<Werner> Wasn't H3 used to be capped to 1GHz by default with 1.2 and 1.3 GHz overlays available?
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> I don't know. When I started taking of allwinner devices 5 months back, it was already overclocked to 1.39. I downclocked it to 1.2 something

<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Hm. With fresh 23.11 image clock is open up to 1.3GHz already. Making the available overlays kind a useless ^^
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> yeah, 1.296 is the default I guess. I am not sure why we these devices overclocked by default. The patch for overclocking comes from megous tree IIRC
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> we even overclock rpi4 by default

<facu.b> Hey what's up
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I have an Asus Novago. It is Windows on ARM devices
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I've been trying to boot Linux on it, for software development
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I managed to access the bootloader
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> But the version of Ubuntu for ARM I tried to boot doesn't
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> The Novago is AArch64, it has a Snapdragon 835 (actually 830, I think?)
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Is there any prebuilt distro that works?
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I am quite the noob so building my own would be uh unfeasible
hipboi has joined #armbian
<juri_>
so, you need a kernel that works, and a devicetree file. knowing what CPU does not tell you where everything on the motherboard is wired to, or how to set it up.
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @facu.b is that the one from 2008? if so that's going to be very unlikely...
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> er 2018
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Considering that's the year I purchased it, yes
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I belive so

<facu.b> TP3OQL
<DC-IRC>
<microlinux> Since it's unsupported, Ive texted you privately
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah you will likekly find nothing that will run on it... I'm doing some searching now and finding no hits at all on it other than Windows support... Fedora and the last kernel work was abandoned it appears about 4 years ago
norton has joined #armbian
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Moreover BitLocker got mad I disabled secure boot and now askes me for a key
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> With noone in this group having that unit there would definitely be noone like in Armbian that would know/have a working image for it
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> ~~TP3OQL~~ TP37OQL
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Looked like a good piece of hardware for that time though
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I mean, it has 6gb ram and a (albeit small af 100gb) SSD, and the snapdragon is supposed to be fast (??) so it's good for a netbook
<DC-IRC>
<microlinux> I run fedora efi on rk3566 woth upstream uboot. But most probably that laptop uses a completely different boot proccess
<DC-IRC>
<microlinux> I ran fedora efi on rk3566 woth upstream uboot. But most probably that laptop uses a completely different boot proccess
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> VSCode is available for Windows on ARM
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> But so little is
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @microlinux that and the snapdragon cpu and hardware is going to be a problem
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> To be honest after debloating Windows and other apps it run smoothly enough
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I'm still pondering getting one to replace my Pinebook Pro that went out... I just need to find a light small notebook to carry on my bike heheh
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> yeah the novago is light af... also has LTE
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> (My Macbook Pro does not dare go on these rough rides lol)
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Yeah I guess Linux on that device is a no-go
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Thanks for the help
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Pun not intended
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I have Linux in VMs....
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I think another problem is Virtualization is disabled
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> I tried running WSL and it didn't really work
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I just won't put it through the punishment of riding on my bike
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> My Pinebook Pro was perfect for it but its board weny out...
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> @facu.b There is https://github.com/aarch64-laptops/build and also postmarket os's repository lists the novago's dtb in their qualcom kernel package so its possible you might be able to run something on it
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> My Pinebook Pro was perfect for it but its board went out...
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Just we don't have the device, so we are not able to guide you with the same
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Hey... good find...
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> worth a try
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> even has the info on disabling bitlocker it looks like
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Thats was just 2 minutes of searching. Really try on your own risk
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Indeed
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Let us know if you do though and it works
hipboi has joined #armbian
<DC-IRC>
<facu.b> Yes, I might try it for the fun of it, but it is missing Wifi (I don't think they'll every fix it), and also BitLocker won't allow dualbooting because it bitches about disabling secure boot
