<Guest39> I have a problem with running River
<leon-p> Guest39: you don't have to wait for permission to state your issue
<leon-p> just write it
<leon-p> although note that it may take a while for an answer to arrive, you can always check channel logs if it's longer than you can stay conneced
<Guest39> Sure, thank you.
<Guest39> I'm 100% new to linux, but willing to learn, so I just installed arch manually with full luks with no problems
<Guest39> + nvidia proprietary drivers
<Guest39> decided to use river, installed it but can't go beyond displaying background + moving mouse cursor
<Guest39> and only keybinding working is to exit.
<Guest39> then I installed another wm - sway
<Guest39> and then River works fine.
<Guest39> removed sway - River doesn't work, again.
<Guest39> looking at the dependecies I cannot figure out what is missing in River packages that Sway installation miraculously fixes.
<leon-p> you might be missing a terminal
<leon-p> the example configuration uses foot
<Guest39> Yes, I know. Foot is installed, but doesn't launch when River is one and only WM isntalled on my system.
<Guest39> When Sway is installed - Foot launches with no problem.
<leon-p> are you certain foot is installed?
<Guest39> From within River.
<Guest39> 100% sure.
<leon-p> can you try to launch something else with a keybind?
<leon-p> might require editing the init
<Guest39> Let me check.
<Guest39> I know that River reads the init correctly, because changing background colour works.
<leon-p> river does not read the init, it merely executes it. THe init could f.e. stop half-way due to shell control flow
<Guest39> But since I see background colour changed and it is one of the last things in order in init file, I can assume that it executes up to this point, yes?
<Guest39> all key bindings are beforte that.
<Guest39> before*

<Guest39> Is it possible that it has something to do with wlroots 0.17 vs 0.18 ?
Palanix has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<leon-p> unlikely
<leon-p> can you try running foot from another TTY?
<leon-p> use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to go to TTY2, login and run `WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1 foot`
<leon-p> while river is running on TTY1
<Guest39> It fails to run due to some "failed to match font" errors
<Guest39> err: fcft.c:529
<Guest39> and then that "failed to load primary fonts"
<Guest39> fcft is installed of course.
<Guest39> I assume the problem is now foot related and I should try to tinker with foot.ini or try another terminal emulator - am I right with this?
<leon-p> there is a chance you don't have any fonts installed
<leon-p> yeah, maybe ask in #foot
<leon-p> although I do suspect it's missing fonts: sway likely pulls in fonts as a dependency, since it has text rendering in its window decorations
<Guest39> OK, I'll take this direction, thank you very much!
<Guest39> I'd like to add something
<Guest39> first when I installed River
<Guest39> It refused to start at all
<Guest39> due seatd not running
<Guest39> and user not being in seat group
<leon-p> that is a misleading wlroots log message, you don't need seatd specifically, just some sort of session management
<Guest39> Neither River nor Arch wiki mention this, although maybe it's obvious, I don't  know :)
<leon-p> i.e. logind should work just as well

<rrix> does anyone have recommendations on running squeekboard or maliit under river? squeekboard seems like it should work but my nixos system doesn't have gsettings schemas for accessibility stuff to signal apps to show the input method when input is focused…

<__toor__> So, I finally got my distro up and running on actual hardware. Big surpise (not really), the rendering did not work
<__toor__> it worked in qemu so I suspect its something related to the graphics driver
<__toor__> error(wlroots): [render/wlr_renderer.c:272] Could not initialize renderer
<__toor__> any ideas how I can debug that further?
<__toor__> before that, only info statements, like Found 1 GPUs
<__toor__> WLR_RENDERER=pixman river works at least
mtm_ has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<ifreund> __toor__: make sure you have all the necessary mesa bits for gles2 on Tour hardware
<ifreund> *your
<ifreund> some distros call the package mesa-dri fwiw
<ifreund> also make sure you have the kernel driver for your GPU of course
<__toor__> would not the gles2 thingy appear also for pixman and/or qemu rendering?
<ifreund> no, pixman is software rendering
<ifreund> qemu uses different graphics drivers than real hardware
<__toor__> impressive library, the graphics with pixman felt really snappy still
