<rneese>
does riscv with sbi require grub or is it a option ?

<rneese>
can we use extlinux insted
<bjdooks>
sbi is independant of boot loader, it just retuires installing before anything like a kernel
<rneese>
but is grub required or is it optional
<bjdooks>
a bootloader is required, grub/uboot/whatevs
<rneese>
as we are finding grub issues with device tree files
<rneese>
but had heard through the grapevine grub was required
<rneese>
thanks guys
<bjdooks>
I use uboot and opensbi
<conchuod>
required for what exactly
<conchuod>
"required" for distro folk like Esmil perhaps
<bjdooks>
pain and suffering
<bjdooks>
i think even canonical can deal with uboot as long as it isn't stupidly setup
<conchuod>
iirc they do uboot -> grub for riscv stuff
<drmpeg>
Ubuntu for Unmatched is u-boot.
<conchuod>
I should really know, but I forget.
<rneese>
yeah balbes150 who was working on the ubuntu/debian 2 in 1 builder was using grub because he wanted to have multi kernel and grubtools
<bjdooks>
I can see the advamtages of using an EDK/grub style boot as it makes your boot process much more pc like
<bjdooks>
but i can also see the advantages of poking those people with sticks
<bjdooks>
I'd also like to find out whoerver made the software for my smart washing machine, and poke them with many sticks... according to the selftests it's all fine, according to any attempt to make it wash clothes, it isn't
<rneese>
is it a front or top load
<rneese>
if topload does the spinner /agitator retract when in spin mode
<bjdooks>
front load. and entirely not existant error reporting
<rneese>
ok on frontload if you open the door and try to spin the drum does it move
<bjdooks>
yeah, it can even move the drum itself
<bjdooks>
it can put water in and pump water out
<bjdooks>
at this point i'm tempted to just turn it on and off
<rneese>
unplug let sit for 5 min
<rneese>
short the 2 power prongs to discharge the caps
<rneese>
plug back in and do a reset
<rneese>
it should be in the manual
<conchuod>
>2 power prong
<conchuod>
heh
<rneese>
220 volt washer
<rneese>
yeah
<bjdooks>
why would you have anything else, 110V is just silly
<conchuod>
speaking of 2 prongs, the sockets in the us are so dodgy
<bjdooks>
which is why I buy US to cloverleaf and US to fig8 for travel
<bjdooks>
UK plug plus adapter == recipe for disaster
<conchuod>
stuff falls out, partially exposed live connectors while unplugging
<conchuod>
ye bjdooks the weight with an adaptor makes it even dodgier since its like a big level on something already insecure

is still amazed by the fact that "unplug let sit for 5 min" is actual legitimate advice with electronic devices
<bjdooks>
it tends to work with my car
<bjdooks>
but that's my silly fault for buying anything GM make
<rneese>
the 5 min thing is so all the capacitors have time to drain out
<rneese>
and anything in that migh tbe in its minimal mem has time to clear
<rneese>
and then a full reset helps clear out bugs
<rneese>
unles you have other bugs then time to call the bug man
<bjdooks>
nope, just rodents
<rneese>
mice and rats hate ultisonic sounds
<rneese>
so get sone wall plugs that emit it
<rneese>
thats what I have and not had any issues as of late with this cold weather and them trying to come in and make a winter home
<rneese>
and you spouse might be what you call a rodent or your children
<rneese>
lol
<rneese>
lol
<cousteau>
rneese: doesn't it work for digital circuits as well, because some of them have internal built-in timers that will shut down the thing when something happens, and refuse to work until a "cool down time" has elapsed?

<rneese>
yes as no power = no heat and there for it cools down faster
