I wonder what should be the failure mode for when the terminal doesn't respond to CSI 6 n. It's probably safe to assume that will never happen, so maybe the shell can block until it does? That would simplify other things. Could still allow ctrl-c as escape hatch

you can either assume it'll always work, or follow up the 6n request with another request you're more sure all terminals will respond to (thus ensuring you get some kind of response)
