<basvdlei> Hi, I just got pointed to a scary article that the Linux kernel 5.19 will have an up to 70% performance drop on VMWare ESXi. It's based on this mail form VMWare on LKML: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/PH0PR05MB8448A203A909959FAC754B7AAF439@PH0PR05MB8448.namprd05.prod.outlook.com/
<basvdlei> Since 5.19 is already in testing, I guess it will land in stable soon. Is is planned for the next release?

<walters> basvdlei: I'd read that mail more carefully; "up to X" can be very deceiving. The 70% case looks highly synthetic to me. It looks closer to a 10% hit for *large* systems (100 + vCPU). And you can always trade off security vs speed, changing kargs on FCOS is fully supported. In this case it's `spectre_v2=off`
<walters> Just saw https://github.com/edgelesssys/constellation go by - it uses FCOS. Seems like they add dm-verity though https://docs.edgeless.systems/constellation/architecture/images
<basvdlei> walters: thanks, yeah I need to get some real perf numbers on my side. I was just wondering if other users should be notified about this potential drop/workaround.

<nemric> Hi, did someone have trouble with systemd-userdbd.service on boot ?
<nemric> since 36.20220820.3.0 on a diskless server this service fail to start
jpn has joined #fedora-coreos
<marmijo> dustymabe: approved!
<dustymabe> Nemric: I haven't seen that
<dustymabe> walters: I think the final step is for us to just move to start targetting the quay.io/fedora/fedora-coreos container image repo
<dustymabe> do you see any blockers to making the switch?
<dustymabe> i.e. do we need to consider existing users (if there are any?)
<walters> dustymabe: well...it'd be good to auto-mirror to the old location for at least a while, that should be easy
<walters> definitely existing users in https://github.com/coreos/coreos-layering-examples

<nemric> dustymabe: Annoying :/ That only happen on the diskless server, the installed stable one is ok, the other istalled Next realease is ok
vgoyal has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<dustymabe> walters: do you mind running through one of those layering examples with the most recent rawhide (now manifest listed) and see if you hit any issues?
<walters> dustymabe: yep works fine
<dustymabe> walters: thank you!
c4rt0 has joined #fedora-coreos
<dustymabe> isn't that what we just talked about?
<dustymabe> an hour ago
<walters> ah yeah sorry I am conflating the manifest list and moving discussions
<dustymabe> yeah the manifest list is done.
<dustymabe> moving to the new repo should be as simple as switching out the secret in the cluster and using the new string representing the new repo
<dustymabe> the "mirroring" is the part that isn't defined
<dustymabe> mirroring to the old location
<walters> seems easy to make a cron job to do it, or run a small new pod. But in the end we can also just let it get out of date for a bit, socialize the new location, and just hard delete the old ones in a month probably too

<dustymabe> walters: I added some more to the commit ^^
<dustymabe> since we'll use this secret to push the kubevirt container in the future too I gave it a new name rather than re-using `oscontainer secret`
bgilbert has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]
<dustymabe> walters: one more stamp there and I'll merge it and set up the secrets in cluster
<dustymabe> ravanelli: marmijo: mind looking over https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-pipeline/pull/631 ?
<ravanelli> checking
<dustymabe> It's mostly the PR from jlebon rebased with a few fixups and tweaks

vgoyal has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<ravanelli> dustymabe: Done. So we idea would be for us to keep one config.yaml file in the redhat-coreos repo for example?
Guest2691 has joined #fedora-coreos
<ravanelli> s/we/the
<dustymabe> ravanelli: right.
<dustymabe> we'd keep it somewhere. I think jlebon's idea was to keep it in a repo by itself
<dustymabe> but there is https://github.com/coreos/coreos-assembler/pull/3094 which proposes storing some config in the src/config repo
