<ppetrov^> hey guys, i am sure this has been asked before, but what will be the policy of CRUX about la files for the next version?
<SiFuh> Abolished
<ppetrov^> so, each Pkgfile should make sure to remove them?
<SiFuh> Ahh, not sure about that, but I do remember removing them in my ports last year, because there existence was kind of pointless these days
<ppetrov^> well, i get into problems, not only because of freetype.la, but others, such as libGL.la
<tilman> some programs might use la files to load plugins. years ago, mpeg123 was one such program
<SiFuh> Yeah this has been brought up a few times
<SiFuh> tilman: Yeah my vlc port still uses la files
<ppetrov^> ok then
<SiFuh> In general most aren't needed
<SiFuh> ppetrov^: I see no reason why they freetype.la and libGL.la
<ppetrov^> m?
<SiFuh> Some of the guys have just deleted them
<SiFuh> I did a rebuild
<ppetrov^> to be honest, the rebuild of ports after a certain la file is no longer present is still mysterious to me
<tilman> libltdl is the name of the library that may be used to implement library loading via la files. you'd then use lt_dlopen() instead of the standard dlopen() function
<ppetrov^> i tried to just prt-get update foo -fr, and it broke. Then I used the loong command line posted here and -- miracle, it worked
<tilman> ppetrov^: program foo's build might try to locate and use libbar.la. if it's there, libbar.la will refer to its own dependencies, e.g. libbaz.la. if you already deleted libbaz.la, then foo's build won't work
<ppetrov^> thNKA
<ppetrov^> thanks
<tilman> so then you might have to tweak libbar's build to no longer produce libbar.
<tilman> then, building program foo might still *try* to locate libbar.la, but it won't find it and thus won't try to use libtool for the build
<tilman> IIRC that's how standard autoconf/automake builds handle it
<tilman> it's been years since i've dealt with this crap though, i hope i'm not getting it horribly wrong ._.
<ppetrov^> jeez... and a year ago i had no idea la files existed and i was much happier...
<tilman> libtool (and thus la files) made sense to have in the 90s when there were still many competing unix systems with differing capabilities in their dynamic linking support
<ppetrov^> so, they are kinda legacy thing
<tilman> nowadays there's just BSD-ish and linux systems that have sane dlopen() support so libtool has gotten pointless
<ppetrov^> btw, dia requires freetype-config, which is gone now. It's interesting that if I recompile freetype using autotools i get freetype-config, as well as the freetype.la file

<dlcusa> SiFuh, ppetrov, tilman, jaeger, jue, beerman, Romster: This discussion of la files needs to be added, if not to the Handbook, then put it the wiki and linked to in the Handbook.
<dlcusa> And discuss revdep at the same time.
<SiFuh> Does come up a bit ;-)
<ppetrov^> but revdep doesn't catch la files

<groovy2shoes> delete all la files. system runs perfectly.
<SiFuh> My wife does that to my beer and nothing runs perfectly
<groovy2shoes> rm -f wife
<SiFuh> Heh, I have a padlock on the fridge
<SiFuh> Agressive absconding of bottles of brew requires constant guarding and continual padlock control
<groovy2shoes> nice poem
<SiFuh> I'm a poet and didn't even know it?
<groovy2shoes> pithy, yet depicts a fundamental fact. who could require aught else of a verse?
<SiFuh> Not sure of what language wa used there
<SiFuh> Reminds me of my brother whe I told him to stop usin the stupid words like 'jabbed'
<SiFuh> How many of those people experienced cascading systems failure of their carnal bodies because they were injected, either willfully, through coercion or by force, by an unknown substance purposed for nefarious means?
<SiFuh> And I replied
<SiFuh> Out of the sundry of celebrated notables, curious as I may be, for which I'd aspire to learn is the total number that were actually inoculated and did indeed succumb to the misfortunes of the villainy that was indentured upon them, whether by the impetus of such foolery or mandatory obligation?
<groovy2shoes> :D
<SiFuh> If letters are missing, it isn't really me, the keyboard is failing and not keeping up. I will eventually replace it
<SiFuh> I like to tease him because he spells it jail and I was taught gaol.
<groovy2shoes> to me, gaol looks downright archaic
<SiFuh> It is English dude
<SiFuh> We tease my brother because he learned retardish
<groovy2shoes> English and outdated
<SiFuh> Still used
<groovy2shoes> decreasingly so
<SiFuh> By de-educated buffoons?
<SiFuh> Wow, didn't language had an authority :-P Hahaha
<groovy2shoes> you're the authority, apparently :þ
<SiFuh> All good, just teasing everyone
<SiFuh> Although most of American English is garbage they do have some cool modifications
<SiFuh> I really like the replacing of s with z
<SiFuh> recognise, recognize
<groovy2shoes> "jail" isn't really a modification, just the adoption of a competing spelling dating from the Middle English period
<SiFuh> But I do not like the use of of license as both a noun and a verb.
<SiFuh> groovy2shoes: to be honest there was no standardi(s/z)ed spelling
<SiFuh> Standardized spelling was introduced around the late 18th century. I am not 100% if that is correct. It could have been early like 19th century
<groovy2shoes> there still isn't, really. English doesn't have any authoritative language group like many other languages do. so spelling mostly comes down to convention. closest thing to an authority is the Oxford English Dictionary, which is crazy huge and expensive.
<SiFuh> I will ignore Oxford
<SiFuh> But I will accept convention
<groovy2shoes> there are certain words that still don't have their present spelling until the 20th century, even. i've got a book from the 1940's that still writes "divers" for "diverse"
<SiFuh> Yeah I agree I read a lot of 17th century or earlier works and the spelling is painful but acceptable
<SiFuh> Always because the language and grammar is impressive
<SiFuh> I admire both the skills and the vocabulary that they had
emmett1 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<groovy2shoes> tbh it kinda bothers me that students always have to read old works with modernized spelling. Shakespeare, for example, was writing at a time centuries before modern spelling was developed.
<SiFuh> Hol don I want to show you a video
<SiFuh> I think John something
<SiFuh> This one
<groovy2shoes> had me until "scenario". that's 20th century English right there :þ
<groovy2shoes> i honestly like his version better than the one i got as a kid
<SiFuh> I liked it
<SiFuh> Because it really does inform us of what has changed
<groovy2shoes> i've been reading to the baby from Mallory's Morte Darthur. my child is going to have a good command of "anon" and "thou".
<SiFuh> Hah
<SiFuh> The new English is garbage
<SiFuh> I hope you can teach her to use a real English
<SiFuh> her/him sorry
<groovy2shoes> i wouldn't call it garbage, just different. but it does often feel like something's been lost.
<groovy2shoes> it's her, you got it.
<SiFuh> It's garbage in my opinion, not that my opinion matters
<SiFuh> Your language defines you, even unknowingly
<groovy2shoes> i'll spend about a decade trying to teach her real English before she switches to teaching *me* how people actually talk
<groovy2shoes> i was just thinking about that defining quality yesterday, actually
<groovy2shoes> i was thinking that some of my favorite authors are people who understand that intuitively, and sculpt their use of language to help define characters without actually describing much about them
<SiFuh> Language is an art
<groovy2shoes> indeed
<SiFuh> Spraying diarrhea on a wall doesn't make it art or educated, they can only pretend it is hoping someone purchases it

<SiFuh> Walk into my saying "Yo! what's up bro! with jeanes and the lefto overs of the Kokoda trail hanging from your face, then you ain't walking any further"
<SiFuh> Heh, misplaced quotations and spelling errors
<groovy2shoes> my recent favorite was the "artist" who taped a banana to the wall. some arsehat bought it for like $150k USD.
<SiFuh> Hah
<SiFuh> What a fscking tool
<groovy2shoes> it's all Marcel Duchamp's fault
<SiFuh> Same time that is disgusting
<SiFuh> You know if I was a trillionare I wouldn't be. I'd give it away
<SiFuh> If I had a way to take care of your sick baby, I am going to spend my money on that
<SiFuh> I beleive we are a comunity
<groovy2shoes> we ought to be, at least
<SiFuh> Indivualism is fine, but they need to community to live
<SiFuh> to/the
<groovy2shoes> but if you give it all away, you'll never be able to build yourself a spaceship, or a gold-plated loo
<groovy2shoes> or a spaceship with gold-plated accomodations
<SiFuh> Look at Bezos for example. Everyone is crying like bitches at home wearing face condoms and losing money. Bezos is making money.
<SiFuh> Don't think I want a space ship or a gold plated loo
<groovy2shoes> that's why you'll never be a trillionaire
<SiFuh> I told everyone to remove the condoms off their face for my wedding
<SiFuh> I agree. I love life too much
<SiFuh> I can never serve evil
