<Isotop> I have a really strange issue when building the iso on tree `3.6`. When running `sudo make iso`, $(PWD) seems to be not resolved which then leads to $PORTS_DIR being resolved to /ports which in that leads to a failed copy loop of ports: bsdtar: Error opening archive: Failed to open '/ports/*/filesystem/filesystem#*.pkg.tar.xz'
<Isotop> Any ideas?
<Isotop> I could run make clean and try again but `make bootstrap` takes >30 hours on my server
<Isotop> when I run make initramfs for example the PORTS_DIR is correctly resolved. Might have to do sth with sudo?
<Isotop> oh wow...sorry....sudo -E resolves the problem. So it seems to be some kind of ENV problem
<farkuhar> Yes, environment variables don't get passed to the process running under sudo unless you ask for that behaviour explicitly.
<farkuhar> What makes it more confusing is that Makefiles use this idiosyncratic syntax $(PWD) which looks suspiciously like command substitution in a shell, but is not the same.

<jaeger> Isotop: also, you don't need to re-run the bootstrap every time you run make iso, unless you WANT to re-bootstrap packages
<Isotop> thanks both of you :) it now works and maybe I will have a bootable ISO for my MacBook afterwards

<exvoid> Hi, i have a nice livecd based on crux ,made 4years ago ,nice installer ,kernel 4.9.8 ,i guess crux 3.2. can i install that and use normal systemupdate ?
<jaeger> Technically you could install that and update, yes, but it would be a lot more work than installing from the updated media
exvoid has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jaeger> In other words I think you would spend more time updating and fixing than if you installed from new media

<xxxfgy> Hi, i just was kicked 2 times by the libera-webchat .sorry for that .i asked about the old livecd based install.i love the config saves me lot of time.how to update/check the ports for compatibility? I used usr pkgmk , ports are under home-pkgmk-ports. thanks
<jaeger> 14:39 < jaeger> Technically you could install that and update, yes, but it would be a lot more work than installing from the updated media
<jaeger> 14:39 < jaeger> In other words I think you would spend more time updating and fixing than if you installed from new media
<jaeger> Those are what I said earlier when you disconnected
<jaeger> It's always possible to do such upgrades, just may not be at all easy or convenient to do so
<jaeger> Being a source-based distribution makes this more of a challenge
<xxxfgy> thanks , i didnt disconnect ,the webchat via surf left the page midline ... bin-wise i just would change i3 for herbstluftwm all the rest is perfect.i had the hope there would be a script somewhere...
<jaeger> Is it that you want to keep a livecd crux environment around but something newer than 3.2?
<jaeger> If so, maybe you'd like CruxEX? https://cruxex.exton.net/
<jaeger> It's unofficial but seems regularly updated/developed.
<groovy2shoes> "all Linux enthusiasts/nerds favorite OS" lol i love it already
<jaeger> heh
<jaeger> bold statement, to be sure :)
<groovy2shoes> indeed
<xxxfgy> no .im just leaving void now, so its either crux mor comfort less libressl or sabotage less comfort more libressl
<xxxfgy> cruxex didnt publish their sources last time i checked
<xxxfgy> livecd is just a painfree basesystem , the rest is in wemu lxc
<xxxfgy> qemu
<jaeger> Are you running it from the live media full time or just using that as a base install?
<xxxfgy> iplanned it as an installer but it was so comfortable i stuck with it. just now its a bit old .uses dwb (perfect browser ...) i3 mainly gtk2
<xxxfgy> 900mb
<xxxfgy> copies to ram if wished
<xxxfgy> dwb uses webkit1 btw
<jaeger> Well, if you want to go that route you certainly can upgrade... it will just take a lot of time and some effort
<jaeger> You'd switch your ports trees to point to 3.6 instead of 3.2, update ports, recompile your toolchain first (binutils, gcc, glibc), then update/rebuild others
<jaeger> As well as install any new dependencies that have been added since then
<xxxfgy> hm , maybe time for a fresh install ... thanks
