Should CRUX seek to make the https://sysdfree.wordpress.com/2021/12/12/333/ list? I think not. Just because the systemd crew absorbed stuff like elogind is not justification to boycott it.
<pedja>
how is elogind 'absorbed by systemd' when it's systemd's logind extracted into stand-alone library?
<pedja>
I'd say that makes no sense, but then again I don't really expect much sense from that crowd :)

pedja, I may be wrong about elogind--I was thinking more about preexisting packages like libudev.
<dlcusa>
I guess getting on that list is according to how the list's creators define things.
<pedja>
defining distributions not using systemd, for whatever reason, as 'hardcore' is silly, imho :)
<pedja>
and so is not being ready to face consequences of that choice, whatever that might be
<dlcusa>
They appear to view systemd as a virus. We should want CRUX to be on the public's radar as a non-systemd distro, and this list might be part of maintaining that awareness.
<pedja>
CRUX has more qualities then being 'non-systemd' distribution
<dlcusa>
pedja: Yes, of course. Using sysvinit is not even that important vis-a-vis the ports concept or even build-from-source. But for people looking for "not systemd", we should not be invisible.
<pedja>
I moved on from Crux years ago, so my opinion really doesn't matter, but that's not the company, as represented by that site, I'd involve CRUX with :)
<dlcusa>
I am bothered that, from their PoV, CRUX is not systemd-free.
<groovy2shoes>
they're oddly missing Slackware, too
<dlcusa>
But that's their problem, not outs. ;-)
<pedja>
it's an echo chamber

<groovy2shoes>
as far as i can tell, several of the distros on that list are just de-systemd-ified versions of other distros that have adopted systemd
<groovy2shoes>
but there are distros that never adopted it that don't make the list
<dlcusa>
Maybe it boils down to how influential the list becomes.
<pedja>
outside their little walled garden? unlikely
<dlcusa>
pedja, I think you're correct, but we're making educated guesses.
<pedja>
imho, ones that think that people interested in trying out Linux after seeing LTT videos, for example, care about the choice of init system are delusional
<dlcusa>
Agreed, and CRUX' doc still recommends UNIX newbies start with something else.

which is a good advice (which I ignored :))
<pedja>
btw, Michael(of The Week in Linux gnews fame) mentioned CRUX in his (sort of) reaction video about LTT #3 video :)
<pedja>
as inspiration for arch
<dlcusa>
See? We're still impressed whenever CRUX is mentioned in public. :)
<groovy2shoes>
i first heard of it in a magazine... i think it was Linux Format
<pedja>
well, he has been using Linux for 20 years, so he must've stumbled on it at some point :)
<pedja>
or heard about it in, I think, frinnst's interview several years ago
<dlcusa>
I am called away--I'll catch up whenever I can return.
