<stenur> btw and funnily there is a super long thread on default paths (someone mindlessly added *sbin stuff, hey!) on tech-userlevel@NetBSD.org, it started last week i think "the day after" the one on crux-devel
<stenur> I personally am _super_ surprised to read things like "It's extremely confusing to get some commands but not all commands in PATH, and there are already systems consuming NetBSD code that don't follow that old unix directory structure"
<stenur> I am maybe too conservative.
<stenur> But if i am root, i have them. If not, i can make no use of it. No?
<stenur> Well my most admin things are in /root/bin anyway, scripted, and i have forgotten all about the actual commands which get used.
<SiFuh> URL?
<stenur> I personally am all for keeping "that old unix directory structure". I am ok with using dynamic libraries everywhere (but in /stand or /rescure which CRUX does not have), as, well, USB sticks etc are everywhere and work(ed) neatlessly on the boxes i own(ed) for some years.
<SiFuh> URL?
<stenur> look at marc.info
<SiFuh> ...
<SiFuh> NetBSD sbin path site:marco.info
<SiFuh> Nothing
<stenur> Though i am _graceful_ that on CRUX cryptsetup comes with a .static variant right away
<SiFuh> Thanks bro!
<stenur> sure
<stenur> seems to fit here too "Adapt the default /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession instead? Maybe make it extract PATH from /etc/sh.rc?"
<SiFuh> Display managers do not create login shells, and xdm was used.
<stenur> same message.
<stenur> ah na, my was response to that
<SiFuh> Yes about 2 or 3 after
<stenur> (not in my mailer's thread view)
<SiFuh> This thread is crossing two lines. THe first is introducing a PATH with the *sbin and the variables used for Xorg
<stenur> 'just posted
<SiFuh> I am all for removing the sbin variables because I can always add them myself for a desktop machine. The X* variables should be in a session file. It is why I asked jaeger the other day about .xinitrc and .xsession. I put mine in .xsession because I use xdm. If you use startx you will probably put them in .xinitrc. However, I have no clue about Wayland or GDM, KDM and so on.
<stenur> unfortunately _that_ change was not reverted by jaeger@
<SiFuh> Nothing has been changed yet. It'
<SiFuh> s all awork in progress
<stenur> well that tremendous pile of invented XDG variables has been removed
<stenur> interesting also this: xterm.vt100.LoginShell: on
<stenur> dunno how this will work out with wayland
<stenur> you can repost at your wish
<SiFuh> That isn't your post :-P
<SiFuh> That is your post
<stenur> ah ya, true. Thanks!
<stenur> kre is saying right again. Also this: In all of this we can adopt the attitude "all the users are morons and cannot make a decision, or configure things even if they knew what they wanted to configure, so we will decide for them" which some other systems are doing.
<SiFuh> Like Windows?
<stenur> No idea since Windows 95B. Sounded like big Linux things?

<jue> guess he is busy with other things right now
<jue> username jmq btw
<jaeger> ok
<farkuhar> jaeger, jue: i successfully logged in to the wiki. Will proceed later this evening to tidy up the formatting of the sandbox pages.
