<farkuhar> jaeger: would it be possible to post the pmwiki source of the 3.7 handbook somewhere public? That might make it easier to merge contributions from users who don't have login credentials on the server. FS#1201 illustrates the challenge of merging edits to the rendered HTML: https://crux.nu/bugs/index.php?getfile=382
<ivandi> beerman: just noticed that wireplumber installs locales and inotify-tools installs docs in /usr/share/doc
<farkuhar> ivandi: the locales were being installed even in the previous version, https://pipewire.pages.freedesktop.org/wireplumber/releases.html#wireplumber-0-4-10 , but that particular discussion got derailed when I brought it up several months ago.
<ivandi> tested 3.7-rc1.iso on UEFI VM. installed core only. grub-install failed because of missing efibootmgr. had to prt-get it with popt and efivar as dependencies.
<ivandi> dracut was missing too. it would be nice to list efibootmgr and dracut as bootloader (grub) dependencies
<ivandi> so far 3.7 looks pretty cool, many thanks for your work guys
<farkuhar> it might avoid problems if grub2-efi listed efibootmgr as a hard dependency, as ivandi suggests. But dracut is more properly classified as "Nice to have", since not everyone is configuring their kernel to use an initramfs.
<ivandi> imho dracut belongs to core. it is a small package no deps. i don't remember when was the last time i tweaked a kernel config for particular hardware. a modular kernel and initramfs is much easier nowadays.
<SiFuh> cryptsetup lvm2 dracut are essential for anyone wanting to do full disk encryption.
<ivandi> all these are available on the iso, but it is not very convenient to look for them during install
<SiFuh> Or remembering to select them :-). I think it was 3.6.1 when finally they were added to the iso. I know 3.5 for sure doesn't have them
<ivandi> a commented line for an efi partition in /etc/fstab would be nice
<farkuhar> to be fair, the handbook does say to check the auto-generated fstab and make sure it matches your particular setup. The user who boots the iso in UEFI mode should be aware of the need for special handling of the efi system partition and the efivarfs pseudo-filesystem.
<ivandi> sure, but small things like that cost nothing and make the life easier for many users :)
<jaeger> Yeah, efibootmg makes sense as a dep for grub2-efi
<jaeger> efibootmgr
<jaeger> efivars line in the fstab sounds useful as well, yeah
<jaeger> SiFuh: ok, will check it out this weekend
<jaeger> farkuhar: the non-rendered source?
<SiFuh> ivandi: vfat or ext2/3? #/dev/sda1 /boot vfat defaults 0 0
<jaeger> Oh, you meant the boot/efi partition, not efivars... but maybe both should be in there
<jaeger> vfat is definitely preferred
<ivandi> #/dev/sda1 /boot/efi vfat defaults 0 0
<jaeger> Some bootloaders support ext for it, not all
<SiFuh> jaeger: it can be the other way around too. I had been given a telstra TV box in Australia maybe 8 years ago and it could only boot off ext2
<jaeger> specifically efi only from ext2?
<jaeger> I think that's out of spec but I might be misremembering
<jaeger> Not that being out of spec stops anyone, really (apple)
<SiFuh> Also there was a linux-firmware update two weeks ago
<SiFuh> Actually if it isn't already efibootmgr is a very useful tool to exist in the ISO's rootfs. Being able to manipulate UEFI entries from the bootable medium would be very good
<jaeger> Should already be there
<jaeger> It's in ISO_PACKAGES
<SiFuh> That's cool, it is there.
<farkuhar> jaeger: yes, the source from which pmwiki generates the html. If that's what handbook maintainers are working with, then user-contributed sections would be more easily merged if they came in the same (pmwiki) format.
