<tpw_rules>
hello all. is there somewhere i can give someone $150 for a beaglev? i am interested in one to port nixos to
<zmatt>
tpw_rules: I'm not even sure the beta boards are available yet
<tpw_rules>
the page says "july" but i kind of suspect i am late to the party and they were all allocated a while ago
<zmatt>
though if you're going to port a distro, perhaps that can get you into the beta program... have you registered your interest on the beaglev site?
<zmatt>
I haven't really been following beaglev much myself
<tpw_rules>
i did, it just asked for my email. i guess i will see if i get any response
<zmatt>
you could also lurk here for someone who knows more about the status to wake up like jkridner
<tpw_rules>
sure. if they want to PM me that would be cool

I would tell you but no one tells me anything, i.e. hint.

I have been trying to follow the ideas infront. There is a forum w/ the BeagleV on it. forum.beagleboard.org.
<m-atoms>
`apt list --installed | grep usb
<m-atoms>
` only shows `
<m-atoms>
bb-usb-gadgets/unknown,now 1.20200504.0-0~buster+20200504 all [installed]`
<m-atoms>
ah should have used pastebin... my bad
<zmatt>
yes you should
<m-atoms>
sorry about that, I was still in slack mode
<m-atoms>
anyways, I'm surprised there's nothing else like libusb. Is that because I have a very stripped down image or because bbb does something unusual with USBs?
<zmatt>
you may still want to share your list via pastebin, unless it really only contained that single entry
<m-atoms>
haha nope, that was really it
<zmatt>
are you running a console image?
<m-atoms>
we had a conversation about this a few weeks ago but I know you field a lot of questions in here. Basically I started with the console image and then stripped down even further based on a list of things (wifi firmware) you don't generally use
<m-atoms>
I just double checked the list of things you suggested and I don't see anything related to USB
<zmatt>
well if you have nothing installed that uses libusb, there's no reason for libusb to be installed

<zmatt>
it'll get automatically installed as dependency when needed if you install a package that needs it
<m-atoms>
well I installed a python package that needed it and it didn't work for some reason. Just wanted to make sure there's no issue with installing manually. After my experience fighting with bbb networking (bc I didn't know about connman) I figured I'd just check here first
<zmatt>
if you want to compile code that uses libusb you'll want to install the -dev package, either libusb-dev (for libusb-0.1) or libusb-1.0-0-dev (for libusb-1.0)
<m-atoms>
that's exactly what I needed, thanks zmatt!

<zmatt>
(presumably you'd want the 1.0 version)
<m-atoms>
hmmm... not sure actually. I'm looking for information about the difference but can't immediately find anything
<zmatt>
libusb0 is presumably kept for backwards compatibility
<zmatt>
apt-cache finds 53 packages that depend on libusb-0.1-4 versus 173 packages that depend on libusb-1.0-0
<m-atoms>
I actually think I might need libusb1. I'm using pyvisa to control a power supply. I have a working laptop and now I'm trying to setup the BBB. When I check pyvisa on the working machine, I see the following: https://pastebin.com/THRrSK7y
<m-atoms>
it appears that the working machine is using libusb1 on the backend
<zmatt>
libusb1 and its -dev are also installed by default on the beagleboard.org IoT images, while libusb0 is not
<m-atoms>
Ah okay nice. So I'm probably just missing it because I went with the console image
<zmatt>
well there's no reason to assume any particular -dev package is installed by default
<m-atoms>
do you just know that because you're a wizard or is there a place to check which packages are included in each image version
<zmatt>
if you want to compile code that needs a particular library, your best bet is to apt-cache search -n '^libwhatever.*-dev'
<m-atoms>
oh very helpful
<zmatt>
I just checked on a bbb running the IoT image (which I have mainly to test stuff in an environment that's similar to what most new users will use)
<m-atoms>
Oh okay that makes sense. Well thanks, once again you've been very helpful!
<m-atoms>
now pyvisa works perfectly, awesome
