zmatt interesting bug although I've no proof EOL handling has always been quirky because of certain people terminating lines differently.

GenTooMan: iirc vim represents documents as a sequence of separately stored lines rather than as a contiguous blob of bytes (which would make inserting/deleting text suck), and that would be why newlines are quite special
