<ernstp> hi! i'm looking into how to properly do a yocto contribution from inside $CORPORATION
<ernstp> I thought about doing a git request-pull style email to get around some of the problems.
<ernstp> is it important that there is not extra line breaks/whitespace things going on even in those emails?
<rburton> ernstp: git-send-email is the traditional way, but if you can't send SMTP directly then you can use b4 to post
<rburton> b4 post or something?
<ernstp> rburton: ok, never heard of b4!
<ernstp> But I thought about sending one of those "The following changes since commit .... are available in the Git repository at" emails, how would that work?
<ernstp> I have a public git where I can push the patches first
<rburton> ernstp: we'll mostly ignore those :)
<rburton> b4 is basically the answer here as it doesn't involve you needing to send a mail
amitk_ has joined #yocto
<ernstp> so is there a web submition endpoint.. ? [b4] send-endpoint-web = https://lkml.kernel.org/_b4_submit
<rburton> yeah that
amitk has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<ernstp> oooh, I see.
<rburton> i think the top level is right
<ernstp> ok, that routes further to all email lists, ok...

<psv> Does anyone know how to use layers that inherit useradd on a read only rootfs system? It complains abuot useradd not being set, and if they are set, it errors out on shadow-base since users cant be crated n target.
<psv> this wasn't a problem in Honister, migrating to Scarthgap

Tyaku has joined #yocto
<Tyaku> Hello, I have some question more related to embedded linux in general. What is the best strategy to keep updated the trusted CA certificates on the target ? Updating the image frequently? Also in yocto the CA certificates are not updated except between each versions, right ?
<ak77> kas is nice. but not fetching bitbake itself seems like missed oportunity, no ?
<Tyaku> Note: In my systems it seems that the certificates comes with ca-certificates_20211016.bb, this file is in poky, so maybe we have to update poky to keep it "updated". Now I'm thinking if there is a daemon or something to do it at runtime (?)

<Tyaku> I see that there is 'update-ca-certificates' in the target, currently not working as rootfs is read only. So we have to think about a strategy to do what we need.
<Tyaku> For example: Change the default ca-certs directory (/etc/ssl/certs to /mnt/data/certs) for example. But we are looking for the "common way" in "embedded world" to keep CA Certificates updated.
<ernstp> rburton: b4 prep --set-prefixes meta-oe][kirkstone gives Subject: [PATCH meta-oe][kirkstone] subject.... a little off but ok?
<ernstp> b4 can only put [PATCH] first..
<ernstp> i guess i can do b4 prep --set-prefixes "][meta-oe][kirkstone" also

<rburton> ernstp: the prefix is added by the list itself, you shouldn't need to do that
<rburton> well you'll want to add kirkstone
<rburton> but not meta-oe

<khem> Tyaku: if you are building a read-only system and including the certs as part of image then you might want to take the recipe into your own layer and do regular updates to the certs recipe and then build images with it and update your systems. Doing ondevice update using update-ca-certificates will need different consideration, e.g. a device may fail because it did not have network access etc. when
<khem> update was requested so you have to code a policy for updating the certs

<kbahn> Hello, I'm trying to get a recipe working where the SRC_URI is a tarball with the default do_unpack task. I do see the tarball getting unpacked, but it is to the root of the ${WORKDIR} (the tarball has a root folder that I see appear there) rather than $S{} or ${UNPACKDIR}. Is there some step or operation that I am missing?
<kbahn> I do not redefine ${S} or any other variables. All that is defined in the .bb is SUMMARY etc., LICENSE etc., SRC_URI etc., and do_install() which I'm trying to copy to a specific folder. Referencing ${S} in do_install() is simply an empty folder. I would expect to see ${S}/my-tarball-root-folder/ but instead I see ${WORKDIR}/my-tarball-root-folder/
<kbahn> instead.
