<vision2profits> hi
<ocdtrekkie> hey how's it going?
<vision2profits> Not being a coder in the IT field, how might I contribute to the project?
<vision2profits> it's going well and I'm enjpoying using Sandstorm

<vision2profits> I posted in the Google group dev channel but no response which ok, I just assumed it to be the wrong place to post

<ocdtrekkie> For one, we do have an OpenCollective which funds some contract work and will fund more stuff in the future. As far as work contributions, there are areas I know our documentation is out of date or incomplete. We will probably have a lot more exciting things coming this year.
<ocdtrekkie> I actually just haven't had the chance to respond to the list email. :D
<ocdtrekkie> It's a pretty good place for anything Sandstorm.
<vision2profits> I feel like contributing as Sandstorm solves so many problems I have been working through with my brief melee with self hosting
<ocdtrekkie> Yeah I haven't seen anything else in the space I want to fight with.
<ocdtrekkie> And the most recent breach of LastPass being caused by an employee's unpatched Plex server... Scary world out there to just install a bunch of stuff.
<vision2profits> Do you use the Sandstorm password manager or Bitwarden(Vaultwarden?) I'm looking to setup a password manager solution and just don't feel like changing it any time soon
<ocdtrekkie> So I am generally averse to password managers (and apparently have a reasonably decent memory for extremely long passphrases)
<ocdtrekkie> But I do use Sandpass to share some passwords with family members.
<isd> I ended up writing my own: https://github.com/zenhack/dvault
<isd> I can't say I'd recommend it to many people.
<isd> But yeah, the landscape is kindof disappointing.
<vision2profits> How solid would you say the Sandstorm project is?
<vision2profits> I'm looking for a home to accoumplish all that it does and not really interested in having a bunch of different solutions to try to manage
<vision2profits> I also would like to learn some coding but not sure what to study that is practical and useful for something I'll be using long term
<ocdtrekkie> There are enough of us stubbornly committed to it that it should be around in some flavor or another for a long time.
<vision2profits> that's about as good as it gets where humans are involved
<vision2profits> I stubbornly commit after a reasonable amount of due diligence (bashing my head against the wall so to speak)
<ocdtrekkie> As far as learning coding, one the neat things about Sandstorm's model is pretty much anything web-based can run in it. A lot of people have a lot of opinions when you ask what language they should learn.
<vision2profits> Yes I noticed that about languages
<ocdtrekkie> Right now a lot of our forward-looking efforts are Golang-based, which is I think generally considered relatively friendly to learn.
<vision2profits> The guy I learned about creating my first LXD server says PHP. and then everyone else says something else
<ocdtrekkie> I am a PHP dev personally, if I am anything.
<isd> It is also nice in that apps written in Go tend to start up quickly, which is a problem a lot of other apps have -- most web frameworks are designed for long-running apps, so they don't really focus on startup time, but Sandstorm shuts apps down when they're not being used, so...
<ocdtrekkie> But PHP is not super popular for new cool things these days. It is very Sandstorm friendly though.
<isd> For web stuff I generally recommend starting with https://developer.mozilla.org and go from there.
<vision2profits> I have been a GUI Linux user for decades for the philosophy and freedom
<vision2profits> I have been looking at freecodecamp as well
<vision2profits> One thing that I use quite oftem is a Canva like app called Baseline, but haven't been able to find any good open source image editing apps
<vision2profits> pixlr-x is pretty handy but getting more an more tightened down towards monthly lock in
<vision2profits> I really want to replace everything proprietary with open source and just donate monthly to devs working on solid projects
<ocdtrekkie> My wife is a big Canva fan too. I'd love a solid alternative on Sandstorm.
<vision2profits> I got Baseline liftime access when they were first on AppSumo
<vision2profits> I have people send me their link to their stuff on Canva and loggin in Canva feels like being married with your spouse at a party and having someone try to hit on you. (I just want to see my client's project files)
