<xet7> TimMc: Raspberry Pi's are very expensive, and too little RAM. I ordered Orange Pi that has 16 GB RAM for about 140 euro. I did not find 32 GB RAM model to be available. There are also 8 GB RAM etc models. Orange Pi will arrive to me at end of this month.
<xet7> I can also add NVME drive to Orange Pi
<xet7> Orange Pi is faster than Raspberry Pi 4
<xet7> I'll test how well it works
<xet7> Raspberry Pi 4 currently costs about 200+ or 300+ euro
<xet7> With any non-RasPi device, I'm testing how well optimized software etc is, can I use it as daily driver. Raspberry Pi OS, RISC OS etc is very optimized.
<xet7> For any computer, 16 GB RAM is the minimum usable for doing development work
<xet7> At 8 GB RAM laptop, I had browser crashing, etc, not enough RAM
<xet7> Also I still have to figure some compiling stuff on non-amd64 CPUs, like at amd64 etc. Sandstorm related I need to build at amd64.
<xet7> It's possible to build Meteor at Mac M1 using Rosetta2. But it's Mac build, it's not for Linux.
<xet7> Building on Linux arm64 does not work yet.
<xet7> At Mac M1, it's possible to run Parallels, and in it Win11 arm64, there also works Win11 amd64 software
<xet7> For Mac M1 there is also CrossOver Mac, some software works on it

<TimMc> xet7: 200 euros, whaaaat?
<TimMc> They should be like $35.
<ocdtrekkie> supply chain also
<TimMc> Looks like it's currently listed at $35.

<isd> TimMc: is it in stock? :P
<isd> 200-300 is what I saw on ebay the last time I looked.
<TimMc> No idea. I don't think they sell direct, and I didn't click through to resellers. But I'm fairly sure the two I bought in the past were $25 and $35 respectively.
<ocdtrekkie> list price has never gone up but list price isn't an achievable goal this year
<ocdtrekkie> and hasn't been for a while
<TimMc> Interesting.
<TimMc> So is Orange Pi some kind of knock-off?
<ocdtrekkie> even years ago when RasPis were available at list, the physical stores near me would only sell you one at list price, and upcharged for extra
<TimMc> Microcenter still has the 2GB model B listed at $45... but is sold out.
<TimMc> so I'm guessing the prices on eBay are purely representing a supply/demand issue

<isd> Yeah, that was the conclusion I came to looking around
<TimMc> Currently I'm running any "heavier" applications on a 10 year old trashpicked laptop, and my two raspberry pi servers are for personal stuff (IRC bouncer, mostly) and bastion/monitoring.
<TimMc> I was thinking of getting another one that could be a portable project computer (CO2 monitoring, wildlife camera, etc.)
<ocdtrekkie> I recommend old USFF size PCs being resold from corporate use.
<ocdtrekkie> You can find them between $60-100 and they're vastly more capable than am SBC and have the case and power supply just baked into the deal.
