novakane: understood, maybe rivercarro can also have something like next-zig, so that it will also be tracked along with latest zig

Hello everyone. How to properly run river on alpine or another non-systemd distro?
<boombim>
I mean seat management session, dbus session and everything else
<ifreund>
boombim: that's hard to answer in general, but you probably want to use your service manager to run seatd and ensure your user has the appropriate group
<ifreund>
iirc alpine has a wiki page on river
<ifreund>
as for dbus you can launch with `dbus-run-session river`
<boombim>
ifreund: thanks a lot. whats a differences between dbus-run-session and dbus-launch?
<ifreund>
no idea, read the man page I guess
<kennylevinsen>
one is older than the other

<scorpion2185[m]>
i use this
<scorpion2185[m]>
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session river on alpine. and you need to exsport /tmp
<scorpion2185[m]>
are they still here?
<scorpion2185[m]>
as temp. dir
<scorpion2185[m]>
there is a wiki
<scorpion2185[m]>
but they removed the command to export /tmp and linked another wiki that wasn't working fine for me

Hi guys, I received Thinkpad P1 laptop and I want to use that as an excuse to try out a new WM --- hence, I'm here. I've recently switched to Wayland and so far I am happy with it (using Thinkpad T480s with Intel's integrated GPU). The only concern I have is that this new laptop is equiped with an Nvidia GPU (A2000). I was wondering if River works
<Guest84>
with the proprietary drivers? I found some people on Reddit saying that they have no propblem using proprietary drivers for Nvidia. However, this was written on River's Wiki page:
<Guest84>
What are the minimum hardware requirements for running river?
<Guest84>
River runs well on a ThinkPad X200 from 2008. Any newer hardware should be perfectly fine, as long as you DON'T use PROPRIETARY graphics drivers.
<Guest84>
Can anyone confirm what's the case? Any adivce would be welcomed! Thanks :-)
<ifreund>
If it works great, if it doesn't we can't help
<ifreund>
the only way to find out is to try and pray that nvidia didn't screw you over
<scorpion2185[m]>
i can help

Thank you for the feedback. I wanted to check. I will definitely try it out. I really wish I could have gotten that laptop with AMD's GPU but hey, it was free so whatever...
<Guest84>
I love Wayland and was very happy to see the BSPWM-like config file and DWM's dynamic features in River. I loved your talk for Zig SHOWTIME. Thank you!

<scorpion2185[m]>
check hyprland wiki , you need to enable drm in nvidia module.
<scorpion2185[m]>
but i didn't try that so maybe it's not fixed. app in fullscreen was not flickering
<scorpion2185[m]>
i had some audio problem , other said it's fine
<scorpion2185[m]>
i need to test with other audio card
<angry_vincent>
nvidia claimed gbm ( instead their own egl-streams ) support added in new drivers, but initially it was to run xwayland.
<angry_vincent>
but it was few years back
<angry_vincent>
is it able to run pure wayland now? i do not know how to explain better
<scorpion2185[m]>
cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
<scorpion2185[m]>
options nvidia-drm modeset=1
<scorpion2185[m]>
no idead about that xwayland thing. I am using x11 on nvidia pc
<angry_vincent>
allright
<scorpion2185[m]>
i think so but I am not sure
<angry_vincent>
my undersanding was that discussion is about running river/wayland an nvidia
<scorpion2185[m]>
yes indeed
<scorpion2185[m]>
wiht proprietary driver
<scorpion2185[m]>
>i think so but I am not sure
<scorpion2185[m]>
it's referred to that "pure wayland"

Regarding the intial answer I got from ifreund:
<Guest84>
> the only way to find out is to try and pray that nvidia didn't screw you over
<Guest84>
Will this depend on the particular GPU model and how it was desigened to integrate with the rest of the hardware, or will it depend on a particular driver version?
<Guest84>
In other words, if I try River and everything ends up working fine, am I at risk of something potentially breaking when my proprietary drivers are updated?
<ifreund>
you are always at risk of something breaking when updating anything, the difference with proprietary software is that the only party who can fix your issue is nvidia
<Guest84>
Thank you
