<xentrac>
my laptop uses 2000-3000 pJ per instruction, the STM32F0 uses 1500 pJ/insn, the STM32L0 or Atmel SAMD picoPower ARM chips use 150-250 pJ (a little less than the MSP430), and the Ambiq chips are like 30 pJ/insn
<xentrac>
well, I guess the GreenArrays chips do come close to the Ambiq datasheet numbers without using subthreshold
<xentrac>
by virtue of having 144 bytes of RAM per processor and being 100% asynchronous logic
<xentrac>
but they aren't very practical to program

I feel like the Ambiqs' 384KiB or 768KiB of RAM is a lot more practical to run a self-hosted development environment on than 64KiB or something. and with the Ambiq chips any RAM that's on another chip (and thus not using subthreshold circuitry) is going to use a massive amount of power compared to the CPU itself, so having a large local RAM cache is a lot more important than with something that uses 50
<xentrac>
times as much energy like an ESP32
<sorear>
wonder if at any point we'll switch to MeV
<xentrac>
instead of pJ?
<sorear>
yes
<solrize>
self hosted development seems like it shouldn't be that important... if i want a super low powered processor i'd think in most cases an 8 bitter is enough
<solrize>
lol
<solrize>
1 MeV = 6.24 pJ?
<solrize>
or the other way
<solrize>
yeah 0.16 pJ
<xentrac>
there aren't any 8-bitters within a factor of 5 of the Ambiq machines' datasheet claims
<xentrac>
self-hosted development is important to me, but I recognize that other people have other priorities :)
<solrize>
istm self hosted is for if your cross dev environment isn't good enough
<xentrac>
it isn't, because it needs batteries
<sorear>
any interactive development environment needs to budget 100W for the human body, and once you do that a lot of things become rounding errors
<sorear>
/ymmv
<xentrac>
that's temporary
<xentrac>
also though my body doesn't need batteries
