dh`: ooooh i like!
<geist>
surprised he says it fits in 6000 luts, but then it is a fairly regular ISA
<dh`>
there's three separate threads there btw, sorry our mail-index interface sucks
<dh`>
(well, sucks is too strong, but it isn't all that navigable)
<dh`>
geist: wouldn't be surprised if he'd taken steps to make it small
<jrtc27>
extending the VAX seems pointless
<jrtc27>
the whole point of the port is to support retro computing
<jrtc27>
if you extend it then it's no longer retro, it's a new thing
<jrtc27>
so why not just use a sane modern ISA for that
<geist>
awww get in the spirit of vax!
<geist>
but yes, extending it doesn't seem like a worthwhile thing
<jrtc27>
I have no issue with hobbyists reimplementing the ISA in order to get a fast low-power implementation compared to the old behemoths :P
<geist>
yah i have my trusty microvax right here actually. beig its a later version (SOC) it only burns obout 90W
<geist>
but... it's not fast.
<jrtc27>
would be interesting to see how it scales on bigger FPGAs like the XCVU9P used on Amazon F1...
<jrtc27>
both speed and SMP
<geist>
though the real fundamental problem is modern netbsd is really not stable on it. it is still maintained, but the vibe i get from the mailing list and whatnot is after a while netbsd got too big to comfortably run (blows the 4K cache, etc) and then it's actually unstable because of probably gcc bugs or whatnot

<geist>
so i guess actually having a faster/modern vax implementation would be nice as a base to re-stabilize the port i guess
<sorear>
the 6000 is for a heavily microcoded impl
<geist>
yah, also things like having additional adders for address calculation should be more or less 'free' on a FPGA
<geist>
so doesn't necessarily have to be so microcoded that there's a single ALU for everything, etc

oh i see their post describing the design now
