<bambukah>
Hello everybody :)
<bambukah>
I have a small question: I have a small laptop (Asus Vivobook with a Intel N4020, 4G RAM...) And I would like to know if OpenSCAD run to make small 3D models, please ?
<teepee>
yes
<teepee>
you'll have to be a bit careful to not generate high resolutions needing lots of memory
<bambukah>
thank you teepee :)
<bambukah>
So the $fn must be "low", right ?
<bambukah>
Also, can I use the dev snapshots to enable Manifold with this small computer ?
<teepee>
yes, prefer $fa/$fs, maybe start in 2d, extrude to 3d later, ...
<teepee>
yes, dev snapshots would certainly also be very beneficial in this case
<bambukah>
Thank you so much teepee for your answers ! You help me so much :)
<bambukah>
(And than ArchLinux AUR to add openscad-git, it's really simple to install dev snapshots with that (but a bit long on a N4020 :) )
<teepee>
I can't say much about Arch, I've never used it but some people here do
<teepee>
well, slower computer, you just need a bit patience, I use quite a number of raspberry pies, which works fine if one does not expect lightning speed :-)
<bambukah>
Wait, you use OpenSCAD on RasPi ? Which one ?
<teepee>
I have it installed, but OpenSCAD I use mostly on my laptop
<teepee>
but for other stuff like running youtube on my "TV" or the document management system and such stuff
<bambukah>
OK :)
<bambukah>
I use OpenSCAd to create some assistive tools for EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) and Hypermobility people. And It change my life :)
<teepee>
nice!
<bambukah>
I've done a model who havemore that 350 odwnloads and more than 100 likes on Printables :D
<bambukah>
I'm so happy for that, it can help many people all around the world.
<bambukah>
and it was done with OpenSCAD
<teepee>
that's an awsome use case. I mostly only do boring stuff for electronics like cases and such. I still hope some people find those useful
<teepee>
hmm, there should be an area on the website for such projects. I just don't know how to get this started
<teepee>
but maybe a simple list could be a beginning
<J24k17>
great idea to add this to the gallery
<J24k17>
there are quite a lot projects for handicaps or elderly
<teepee>
but I feel it gets buried there, with the gallery mostly showing more complex stuff
<J24k17>
make it a folder like scadvents
<teepee>
where this or for example the projects for blind and vision impaired people are sometimes simple things but can be a huge impact on life

You know, assistive tools in Europe are quite expensives (because people can have health care who refund a lot of money) But some people doesn't have these health cares. And that's why I do these tools.
<teepee>
those kind of projects are great. like this stethoscope project giving doctors a tool for a coupole of bucks instead of hundreds of dollars
<bambukah>
And I already work on other tools(most for arthritis this time)
<bambukah>
Don't know If I can talk here about something. But I search something about a "commercial licence" for people who have a 3D Printer and want to sell my tools... Don't know how to do that...
<J24k17>
you can use the printable clubs/store or make it exclusive on bambu ( or go to thangs etc)
<J24k17>
or just select a restrictive license and hope to get contacted by someone who likes to sell - but that is quite unlikely
<bambukah>
Many people ask me where to buy OpenEDS tools (they don't have 3D printers)
<bambukah>
All my tools are on CC BY-NC
<J24k17>
you can sell them via print services
<bambukah>
J24k17: Do you know a good print service ?
<Scopeuk>
They won't a little over a month ago if memory serves
<Scopeuk>
S/won't/went
<J24k17>
I wonder how that could happen
<bambukah>
I imagine something with an API
<bambukah>
Sell the tools from my website and printed&send by a 3dprint service
<Scopeuk>
By the sounds of things their efforts to have distributed manufacturing capacity for quick shipping/distribution left them with massive debts for lots of high end machines, they failed to meet the order requirements to service the debt
<bambukah>
it's so bad for Shapeways :'(
<J24k17>
management gamble
<J24k17>
i also assume for 80% of the jobs, companies can just buy a X1E (bambu) or similar and be cheaper off

<Scopeuk>
It's not even the fdm gamble, it's slm/full colour machines and the machining services
<Scopeuk>
Few people have that but the machines are incredibly expensive to buy and almost as expensive to run

pca006133 Was offline: In terms of Thingiverse. Back then it was small; I think only 2500 OpenSCAD designs existed on the platform. Some took a long time to render, but I only had to exclude 2 designs due to long rendering times. My script did take a _long_ time to run though..
