<J24k93> Do you think we could influence how SCAD is naming the Models within 3mf files - I am ending up with  multiple models in the slicer but all are named "openSCAD Model"  - So we either need to create the 3mf after the save 3mf dialog so the given filename can replace the object name(s) or have an part lable which would be great for multi part
<J24k93> exports later.

<Scopeuk> I think we have discussed meta data mark up in the past as something desirable but I don't remember a conclusion being reached

<J24k93> I think for the future development it is essential to have object names - sure other meta like author license is desirable too, but multimaterial is the next step in 3D printing.
<J24k93> and multi part files should be possible where we need to name these parts - and even it is just the color() name
<J24k93> https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/project-based-workflow  and even arrange multiple sets (trays) to print in one file but i guess that is nothing we want in openSCAD

<Scopeuk> J24k93 I think in this case meta data was around object properties rather than just the top level, so being able to add a way to add material properties or colours at some level (maybe module) or add names
<Scopeuk> I think that did centre around 3mf export in the first instance as that supports all of the fancy stuff
guso78k has joined #openscad
<guso78k> once the color-render-thing is in place we can output parts by color and label the part after the color name/rgb_code
<J24k93> that would be great - or using the top module to name it - for color the color name.  And if we don't have some part() module to name or id it .. maybe using the module name  if no color is available
<guso78k> kintel and me are right now looking into the implementation details. right now i have a solution, when not more than one manifold csg op  is in a a row. have to switch to PolySet in between to break sequences ...
<J24k93> getting colors will be an important step!

<J24k> Ok this is a surprise.. Bambu printer accept 3mf files .. well  Bambu Studio can create 3mf files that contain gcode - which is nice .. BUT those files did not contain any model anymore - Ü ..
<Scopeuk> I think they use 3mf as the container for multi plate prints?
<J24k> they seem to use 3mf for everything
<dTal> That's confusing
<dTal> is this like modern USB where the only "universal" thing is the name
<J24k> Which is not wrong - and adding gcode is great, but stripping the model .. ok the gcode is due to the zip compression smaller but if they would keep the model in you could e.g. change position - sure you would need to re generate the gcode/slice
<J24k> but  the  bamub.gcode.3mf can't be imported anywhere
<J24k> except bambu studio to show the gcode and printed with the printer.. guess you have an image and some more detail info too .. like makerbot used *.makerbot files
<Scopeuk> I think a few of the firmwares now support embedding images in base 64 for preview purposes in stl's

<guso78k> when does it make sense to add gcode to a 3mf fle ?
<InPhase> That feels wrong to me.
<InPhase> If you said scad code, it feels more appropriate.
<InPhase> gcode is a layer down from 3mf, and 3mf files should be designated as a thing that can output to different firmware types. So why embed lower level code for a subset of systems that a 3mf file could be used on?
<J24k> oh i assume they will add scad code too
<J24k> 3mf also contain the 2D images so nothing wrong to ADD gcode but to replace the 3D model is wrong as now the 3mf is not a 3mf anymore as only the meta data is used
<J24k> that is like storing word documents as meta in empty 3mf files
<J24k> guso78 it makes sense for the printer so you can add images and additional information. And it compresses the gcode too
<guso78k> maybe an inteligent slicer can use embedded gcode to correctly do temperature towers ...

<JordanBrown> J24k issue #4977 touches on the STL solid name
<J24k> oh stl can have names too?
<J24k> guess it is in the header then
<JordanBrown> yes
<J24k> It is funny if using Meshmixer the first object is named after the file the second is using the object name ..
