<kintel> JordanBrown Nice, that can be a good productivity/motivation boost. Btw., I found that ninja mostly ends up choosing a close-to-optimal -j value
<kintel> My record is 46 seconds using -DCMAKE_UNITY_BUILD=ON
<kintel> (on my Mac M1 laptop)
<JordanBrown> I did say that it was a Camry :-)
<kintel> heh, but that's a pretty nice CPU, should be able to do -j 30 if you have enough RAM
<JordanBrown> I cranked it up until it was showing 100% throughout most of the build.
<JordanBrown> I don't think it was close to running out of RAM. But of course I want to have enough RAM left over that the compilers, header files, et cetera are all coming out of disk cache.
<kintel> Oh, is this on msys2 ?
<JordanBrown> yes
<kintel> on clang or gcc?
<JordanBrown> gcc
<JordanBrown> at least as far as I know. It was the default msys2 build.
<kintel> try clang - I've had performance issues on msys2 gcc vs. other OS on the same system
<JordanBrown> I don't know how to select that.
<kintel> I believe you just run a different msys2 shell; they have launchers for the different variants
<JordanBrown> Will look at it.
<kintel> ..probably not a huge deal as you can already build faster than most people can think :(
<JordanBrown> But yes, I expect that it will make development much nicer. I would shudder any time I made a change that touched Value.h.
<teepee> hmm, I may have a similar one in the new framework notebook
<teepee> normal mode ninja run is also 3 minutes and does not need all of the 32gb
<teepee> I do like the power-saver mode though, needs 8 minutes, but does not even spin up the fans
<teepee> with clang, not sure gcc would be ok with the 32gb :)
<teepee> 13th Gen Intel i7-1370P (20) @ 5.000GHz
<teepee> right that sounds totally different
<teepee> P instead of 0 ?
* teepee tries the unity build

<InPhase> JordanBrown: I usually just do clean builds to be safe, because it's fast enough.

<InPhase> JordanBrown: Congrats on the boosted performance. :)
<teepee> meh, tor bridge is a bit unstable lately :(
<teepee> normal build is real 3m15,485s with much more CPU load, I guess I'll leave the unibuild enabled :)
<JordanBrown> teepee I do wonder why yours is 5GHz and mine is 2.1GHz.
<JordanBrown> But I need to run now. Later.
<teepee> that's what neofetch says, let me check vendor specs
<teepee> for me it's good night :)
<teepee> 5.2GHz Max Turbo, 2.1 Base Frequency
<teepee> uh, mine has Maximum Turbo Power 64 W, the i7-13700 has 219 W
<teepee> that's quite a difference :)

<linext_> what would be a strong joint to connect 12inch sections of 3d printed ruler?

<InPhase> linext_: Most importantly, it CANNOT have its lines running perpendicularly to the length of the ruler.
<InPhase> linext_: If you mean a permanent joint, like epoxying them together, then you probably want something like an insert that has an almost pointy tip in the middle of the ruler, and 45 degree angles coming forward toward that tip on both sides.
kintel has joined #openscad
<InPhase> linext_: You'd just need to experiment with variations of that sort of idea to find one that is printable without clearance issues, so that your ruler sizing stays valid.

<guso78k> I have noticed https://www.reddit.com/r/openscad/comments/18wpaoz/investigating_new_interactive_features_in_openscad/  today. Personally I totally agree with the "handle"approach. However I am hesitant to initially create such handles in pre-defined positions at first, because they are not flexible at all and it will break backward-compatibility
<guso78k> if they are replaced by something better in the future.
<guso78k> I'd rather appreciated if SCAD language got some syntax to store data along  with module instances e.g.
<J24k> so i need to use the mouse again ?
<guso78k> J24k all additions are options are you are free to use them. No need to use them
<phryk> is there something like echo() that is interpreted as an error?
<J24k> assert ?
<phryk> thanks
<guso78k> The work in  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YL7yqGvRFI can be completely done without mouse, but of course, the mouse could assist to  assemble the code faster
<othx> guso78k linked to YouTube video "Surreal gears" => 2 IRC mentions
<InPhase> Do we know this person?
<InPhase> I applaud someone doing a PhD on exploring functionality changes to OpenSCAD, but they might benefit from talking with us about it too. :)
<J24k> he posted his email

<J24k> and the top comment is building his "spank bank" in SCAD ..   so reddit
<cart_> Damn O.o
<guso78k> I asked google for "spank bank" and got results for "spank bang"  instead '=D '=D
<cart_> Well 'spank bank' already sounds like trouble so. Whatever spank is suppose to be ... uuuhh

<J24k> we should put this into the gallery - Ü
<J24k> or SCADvent24
<phryk> lol, foldable bdsm furniture.
<phryk> love it.
<cart_> Huhhh... well Ill be damned
<cart_> J24k: I see what you did there
<phryk> totally agree with J24k there, that deserves a place in the openscad hall of fame.
<cart_> It's cool cause you don't have the mattress forching you to arch your back forward on the lean in
<phryk> and here i am, only designing boring platforms^^
<J24k> ah shit this is a rabbit hole http://emgbuilds.com/img/byggd/en_byggd.html
<phryk> damn, they got a lot of designs like that
<phryk> yeah, just found that link

<J24k> We just need to compartmentalize with the  church cross builders
<phryk> Do we? Pretty sure those can be seen as dual-use goods. :)

<kintel> ^ looks like relatively basic stuff from a programming perspective, but his work is about HCI.
<InPhase> phryk: Oof, not quite engineered appropriately for the purpose I think.
<kintel> I've been tinkering with such ideas for a long time, but I just don't love GUI enough to start on anything ;)
<InPhase> phryk: That looks like a face-plant hazard.
<InPhase> phryk: Among a few other concerns about the load bearing parts.
<phryk> InPhase: yeah, not quite as robust as i'd design stuff i want to hang people from.
kintel has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<phryk> meanwhile, my platform design is making some progress. just refactored and generalized the creation of crossed struts for extra rigidity. :)
