I guess there are some tools polling it for reasons
<teepee>
yeah, I do understand the Sparkle update check
<teepee>
ah, uff, looks like IP masking is working. crazy stuff, running JavaScript functions for that
<joseph_>
I forgot to mention but a few days ago I received an IRC direct message from a temporary user with the form Guest[0-9][0-9], asking about GSoC. I soon sent a reply to the question but then I received a "no such nick/channel" error. Am I correct in concluding that Libera won't deliver the message even if the user logs on again and gets that same name back?
<joseph_>
On a similar topic it may be helpful to post a guide somewhere for future new/prospective GSoC contributors about how to set up a bouncer. And then there is the simpler option that I've seen suggested: leave a ncurses client running inside tmux/screen on a server somewhere. The reason for this is that in my experience most new OSS participants nowadays will typically never have used IRC before
<teepee>
joseph_: yes, IRC itself has no history. if the user by any chance looked at the channel topic and found the log link, they might find the reponse, but it's not very likely
<joseph_>
teepee: Does that mean that private queries to a single user get logged? Or does the log only include the main channels?
<teepee>
joseph_: oh, private query, no those are not logged
<teepee>
I missed the "direct message" part you said
<joseph_>
Ah ok so that means my response is lost in the ether...
<joseph_>
Hopefully, having received no response this user will return to the main channel and ask here
<teepee>
yes, or the #gsoc channel, even though it's not official anymore, there's at least a couple of people in there
