mps: re boot order, that is a user-facing change, so sort of ABI and you'd possibly break a number of people's setups, so unless you have very hard reasons for doing this, then sadly nope
<mps>
mmind00: I don't have strong reason to 'push' this upstream because I keep my local patch
<mps>
but I saw for some SoC/board this is done (don't ask which ones, I forgot)

I saw some boards where order set randomly on boot and because this I worked on to fix it and found that aliases in DTS is solution
<mps>
example of this consistency is described in git commit 42a495fb94d17589aba826bcb392da721877302f
<mps>
also this f7857bf3745e9ede6367a8ff89c1c4f308bfd914 => 'After a change to the MMC subsystem that can lead to unpredictable device numbers, several platforms add 'aliases' properties for these to give each MMC controller a fixed number'

<mmind00>
mps: yes there is a different case for adding vs. changing aliases ... i.e. without aliases you essentially get a random ordering, depending on which mmc probes first ... but when aliases are there already, that is different
<mmind00>
so people may have started relying on that order already in their kernel commandlines or whatever

yes I know, but I added aliases to gru-kevin before it is added to mainline and adaptet it later when it is added to 'reflect' my use case. After that I forgot it and blindly posted patch above. sorry

<mps>
though I still that emmc should be mmcblk0
<mmind00>
I do agree actually that mmc0 should be the emmc, but this really is a case of 'whats done is done' ;-)
<mps>
yes, I see
<mps>
so ok for me
<mps>
mmind00: on some SoCs emmc is 0
<mps>
maybe this could be reason to consolidate all, but I don't insist. just saying
<mmind00>
mmc aliases are not per soc, but per board ... and nope, existing aliases stay as they are ;-)
<mmind00>
and the actual number doesn't really matter that much ... just that it actually stays consistent
<mmind00>
having emmc as 0 is more an aesthetical thing
<mps>
yes, boards but usually follow SoC
<mps>
aesthetic is good to follow :)
<mps>
another thing when I'm here: I would like to disable keyboard when gru-kevin is put in tablet mode. do anyone here know where I should look in source
<mps>
mediatek mt8173 elm-oak cromebook does this fine somewhere in kernel
