r defconfig being enough to boot any supported board to a UART prompt for development has long since drowned in a sea of "I'm working on this random staging driver right now so enable it in defconfig" patches

sorry for silly question ;)
<robmur01>
well, it's not really a silly question - just that people have different expectations of defconfig

It's actually interesting in that i was not aware of the notion of it (getting to an UART is a rather low bar, and also not one that is actually useful for many devices, where the UART maybe just tiny pads you could solder to inside of it...)
<urja>
like, it would be weird if the x86 defconfig didn't include the VGA text mode, right?

btw does anyone try mainline u-boot on rk356x board?

urja: take "UART" to mean "developer console" - not to rule out others like virtio or EFI, just that overwhelmingly they are actual UARTs

I'm just a grumpy old fart who remembers when arm64 defconfig was a minimal baseline for kernel development (like on x86) rather than the bloated almost-a-distro-config that it's grown into more recently, and likes ranting...
<mps>
I remember about year ago I've built arm64 kernel with defconfig to test something, it was too big
<naoki>
now I'm using arm64 defconfig - CONFIG_ARCH_*(except ROCKCHIP) + some rockchip specific drivers
