<vudiq>
I can throw it into that pr, but now I really need your github handle, because I'm not taking credit for that :D
<vudiq>
fyi - I just tested newly created image (Generic) and works as expected (I used 'run' mode)
<vpeter>
I think there could be even one more change. When both partition files are finished only second partition is merged back. Then disk image for virtual appliance should be copied and after that both disk images should merge first partition.
<vpeter>
But this is not really needed to do.
<vpeter>
But if you have a chance can you try ova file for virtual appliance? I tested on VMware 12.5 and it boots but Kodi doesn't show up for some reason.

If I measure correctly it is 5+ seconds faster.

vpeter: unfortunately I cannot test the OVA image

Ok. It does boot so should be ok.
<vudiq>
what about that github handle? ;]
<vudiq>
added the latest changes - image created, I will test boot on hw

booted on my efi32 netbook, my efi64 chromebook is occupied by my 3yr old /o\
<vudiq>
since grub saves last boot option, it would make sense to use grub also for efi64
<vpeter>
I read some discussion about syslinux and grub few days back. But don't know if this was some PR or post on forum.
<LEBot>
[slack] <cvh> as syslinux is basically dead, wouldn't it make sense to switch to grub or something else ? asking for a friend

Ah, it was vudiq asking here on IRC :D

<vudiq>
yes, it was me ;] i also asked couple days back why grub is used only to build bootia32.efi and why not the efi32 from syslinux is used, chewitt answered that already - some people had issues with efi32 syslinux
<LEBot>
[slack] <cvh> yea but wouldnt it make sense to boot everything the same way ? I am not pretending to understand the boot stuff, tahts why I ask.
<chewitt>
the main issue with these kinds of changes is .. it's change
<chewitt>
change has a habit of throwing up weird bugs
<vudiq>
it would - probably it only needs to build bootx64.efi with grub. legacy/csm - not sure if it is possible to insert grub bootloader into image, but I guess yes - i just never did it
<chewitt>
ye olde "if it works, don't fix it" applies :)

+1 on that :D

<chewitt>
nobody will be against change .. if someone else puts the hours in to *really* test it
<LEBot>
[slack] <cvh> so if I understand right, basically would be nice to have but not worth the effort to get to the point
<vudiq>
making efi boot grub only is easy i guess, more changes would be required for the legacy/bios/csm or how it is nowadays called booting
<chewitt>
boot stuff always seems to depend on low-level juju that nobody quite understands enough to be authoritative
<chewitt>
grub seems to be widely used though, so it's probably a solution
<chewitt>
I can normally think of other things that would (or should) be a higher priority for reinvention
<vudiq>
i dare to make the grub change for efi boot, even make the package work for i386 (for lakka, we currently use only syslinux to boot 32bit PC, no need for grub/efi on 32bit PC)
<LEBot>
[slack] <cvh> yea the amout of "work" to get there is likely not trivial with basically no real benefits 😄
<vudiq>
as I am more of a handyman than an inventor ;]
<vudiq>
cvh: your friends - they want grub on 64bit efi?
<LEBot>
[slack] <cvh> like said I have no idea from that boot stuff 🙂 so I have no real opinion, just saw that syslinux is basically dead
<vudiq>
I might even try to make grub boot in legacy - I just have to get power supply for that laptop that boots only legacy / no uefi, so I can test legacy boot.
<vudiq>
but there are really more important things than bootloader :) I just offer my spare time - I like to learn this stuff
<vudiq>
and i think it is something that i can pull off

lakka does not use xorg, so the xf86-video package is very bare
<vudiq>
i'm building the legacy image right now, just to see if it builds (without nvidia and nvidia-legacy drivers) however, not sure if I can test it without nvidia card :D
<vudiq>
i might have 1660 somewhere
<vudiq>
and in lakka we also enable libkms in libdrm package
<vudiq>
maybe should be enabled also for the non-legacy Generic device
<vudiq>
for libreelec
