<cousin_luigi> Greetings.
* cousin_luigi is contemplating the purchase of a fully OSS STB, but he's unsure about the overall feasibility.
<cousin_luigi> Is there an all-in-one device that supports DVB-T2 and possibly DVB-S2 too?
mad_enz has joined #libreelec
<chewitt> cousin_luigi advice depends on your budget and long-term intentions
<chewitt> best option is some kind of sat>ip box that sits in the network to handle the head-end side of TV reception
<chewitt> then using a dumb(er) client device for 'playback' of streams served from the network box
<chewitt> supports multiple clients and avoids all the messing about with DVB drivers, firmware, etc.
<chewitt> leaves you free to change client device as/when need, desire, or fashion suits you
<cousin_luigi> chewitt: Sounds sensible.
<cousin_luigi> Can you recommend one? Or do most sat boxes support streaming?
<chewitt> numerous members of staff like the Digibit R1 with a particular custom firmware that exposes more options then the default one
<chewitt> HDHomeRun(s) are also in service
<chewitt> I have zero personal experience with them so can't give a proper endorsement
<chewitt> where I live there is no terrestrial broadcast and rules of the apartment complex say no dishes .. and the ISP uses DRM encryption on their IPTV thing
<chewitt> most of my TV comes from a friend's TVHeadend setup 4,500Km away :)
<chewitt> on a lesser budget .. a USB tuner allows you to swap the device between boxes as you upgrade over time
<cousin_luigi> chewitt: No thanks. I'm not into Christmas trees.
<chewitt> Haupagge made a big effort to upstream their drivers into the kernel in the last year or so
<chewitt> TBS are also fairly well supported, though needs a driver overlay in LE since everything is not upstream
<cousin_luigi> "LE"?
<cousin_luigi> Oh libreelec.
<chewitt> their upstreaming is going in reverse due to lots of chinese clone devices and the misguided belief that not publishing sources will stop it
<cousin_luigi> chewitt: I take those clones are cheaper?
<cousin_luigi> Are they any good?
<chewitt> no idea .. see previous comment :)
<chewitt> expect the knock-offs to be cheaper due to using lower-bin chips, lower quality manufacturing and offering zero support
<chewitt> even if you go the USB route, it's often a good idea to put the card on another device, e.g. an RPi board so you can find a kernel/firmware/headend combo that works
<chewitt> then you can swap the client device as/when needed without having to run the software gauntlet on the new device

<shibboleth> any chance libreelec might consider packaging vcam (middleware for oscam for verimatrix-protected iptv)?
<shibboleth> also, independence.day.resurgance.foor.bar-geckos still won't play on librelec on rpi4
<shibboleth> happened some time during 9.2, still works on < = pi3

<shibboleth> yeah, i'm thinking more about the underlying issue, apparently a pi4-specific bug and i only mention that release for re-producability
<shibboleth> about the other issue, re tvheadend+vmcam, is there an openwrt-like build toolchain for libreelec?
