hardcoresushi: no. That's not possible to do in a safe way; foot doesn't own the process tree - the shell does. Injecting a new process into that tree isn't really possible.
<dnkl>
technically, it would probably be possible to reuse the window, while still launching a completely new process. That'd make it look like it was running in the same shell. But it'd be a hack, that adds a lot of complexity to foot. So, not something I want to do.
<dnkl>
I didn't intend to merge it, but if there's enough interest, perhaps I should reconsider

dnkl: OK I understand. So terminals emulators like kitty are actually hacking ?
<hardcoresushi>
I wrote a simple awk script to dynamically change the alpha so I don't personally need a keybinding

hardcoresushi: kitty more or less instantiates a whole new terminal instance for its "less" (with the scroll back output). And then attaches that terminal instance to the already existing kitty window (and "pauses" the original terminal instance while doing so)
<dnkl>
whether it's a hack or not is up to you... but it involves quite a lot of complexity to implement
<hardcoresushi>
OK I see.

dnkl: Anyway thank you very much for having created and maintaining this amazing terminal emulator!
