<anarcat>
okay so here's a weird one
<anarcat>
i love the url browser (control-shift-u) but i *just* realized it conflicts with a keybinding often used by other applications, which is "control-shift-u then a number sequence to enter arbitrary unicode characters"
<anarcat>
is there an equivalent command in foot? or even wayland in general, for that matter?
<anarcat>
what about the Compose key, does that even exist in wayland?

anarcat: "unicode input" is usually handled by an IME. And yes, at least in GNOME the default binding collides. You can just change foot's URL binding.
<dnkl>
foot also as a very basic unicode input mode
<anarcat>
if i disable control-shift-u (or rather, reassign show-urls-launch elsewhere), control-shift-u doesn't fall back to "enter unicode hex" thing
<anarcat>
assigning it to control-shift-u seems to be good enough though :)
<anarcat>
assigning unicode-input, that said
<dnkl>
IME on Wayland is a mess, honestly
<anarcat>
now i need to rewire my brain for control-shift-u
<dnkl>
which compositor are you using?
<anarcat>
sway
<anarcat>
moderately happy, it seems to crash from time to time
alexherbo2 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<dnkl>
Sway doesn't support IME popups. And not all IMEs support the wayland IME protocols implemented by sway...
<dnkl>
fcitx5 is known to work (minus popups)

anarcat: fwiw, I use ctrl+shift+u for URL mode, and ctrl+shift+alt+u for foot's unicode input. But honestly, I usually just copy-paste "unicode" chars into foot...
<anarcat>
heh
<dnkl>
at least emojis, for which I have a fuzzel-based picker
<dnkl>
anarcat: re. compose; not sure, as I've never used that myself. But assuming it is handled like dead keys, then yes, that's supported
<anarcat>
it's handled, amazingly
<anarcat>
using the Xcompose file too
<anarcat>
i guess wayland still uses Xorg after all
<dnkl>
not really. But keyboard handling is exactly the same: both use xkb
<anarcat>
and the x in xkb is...? :)
<dnkl>
xkb was created when X11 was the only kid in town 😂
<dnkl>
now there's usually a package called "libxkbcommon", that contains the non-X11 specifics...

GNOME... other than that; unsure. I think I've seen some, but can't remember any names
