<Marth64> evening
<Sean_McG> Marth :)

<Sean_McG> I want to learn AltiVec and VSX -- I run QEMU right now for the ppc FATE nodes. I have access to power7/8/9/10 machines -- I'm just not allowed to use them as "CI nodes"

<Sean_McG> One of the universities here has a large section of computer books and it would surprise me if they didn't have anything on AltiVec at the least.
MisterMinister has joined #ffmpeg-devel
<Sean_McG> I'd learn better in a classroom setting, but I don't think they offer any courses specifically on POWER arch.
<Marth64> that sounds fun, fascinating :D
<Marth64> PS3 cell cpu is a PPC
<Marth64> maybe theres more books and docs on that?
<Sean_McG> yes, but they don't allow Linux on it anymore
<Marth64> ahhh yes
<Sean_McG> the Cell is also unique because of the SPUs.
<Sean_McG> and I was browsing the gcc release notes and it seems they dropped support for compiling for SPU a few releases ago.

<Marth64> old Macs i guess?
<Marth64> wish i still had one for nostalgia
<Sean_McG> yes, I am looking for an old G4 Mac
Lypheo has quit [Quit: Ping timeout (120 seconds)]
<jafa> I am seeing a possible memory leak (top shows slow growth in memory use and eventually the oom killer kills ffmpeg). Are there any tricks in place I could use to help track the leak down?
<Marth64> i'll keep you in mind if i run into one
Lypheo has joined #ffmpeg-devel
<Sean_McG> I did have a G4 Mac Mini, but when I plugged it in a few months ago it let out the magic smoke, so I think it is dead.
<Sean_McG> jafa: you could run it under 'valgrind', as long as you are running a build that has debug symbols
<Sean_McG> https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_server_g4/specs/macserver_g4_733_qs.html <-- long ago I had one of these as well, I regret giving it away
<Sean_McG> oh wait that is the server... I had the desktop version
<Sean_McG> but it was the Quicksilver
<Marth64> yeah looks like a boss machine for its time
<Marth64> i had a Sony VAIO around that era
<Sean_McG> it was... for software that was AltiVec-accelerated, it ran rings around the equivalent on x86 hardware which was of higher clock.
<Marth64> Wii/GC are PPC too, but not sure they have that power
<Sean_McG> the Wii was a PowerPC "Gekko"... it didn't have AltiVec
<Marth64> i think they have build chains that work though
<Marth64> ahh
<Sean_McG> because games would accelerate on the GPU... which I believe was a Radeon of some sort
<Marth64> yes i think the legend goes ArtX made the chip, ATI bought them and used it for their newer generation Radeon at the time, then AMD acquired
<Marth64> something like thet
<Marth64> s/thet/that
<Sean_McG> sounds about right

<Marth64> jafa: adding this too if it helps, i configure with these to maximize debugging in desparate scenarios: --disable-optimizations --extra-cflags=-Og --extra-cflags=-fno-omit-frame-pointer --enable-debug=3 --extra-cflags=-fno-inline
<Marth64> C is not my native language so I'm sure someone has better instructions
<Marth64> but the ffmpeg_g that gets built with those flags is easy to debug
<Marth64> got me out of a few jams
<Marth64> i should do hello world in rust some day
<Marth64> if only time was not finite

<AreaScout> Hi and Hello, is it possible to retrieve the RTSP base_timestamp after decoding on every frame iteration? Because my problem is that AVFormatCtx hold only the timestamp from the time of analyzing the stream!?
<AreaScout> btw. I don't need a command line solution, I need a C solution
<JEEB> the packets you receive are supposed to have the DTS and PTS
<AreaScout> JEEB, that's of course true, but they don't tell me when the RTSP packet was send, I have to measure the time from sending to receive, before decode, after decode and after color conversation
<AreaScout> Everything after receiving is trivial to solve, but how to measure from RTSP sever to FFmpeg puzzles me

<elenril> fate is dead too
<another|> hmm.. that code would have fallen out with the bump. maybe should've bumped versions first
<mkver> another|: Disabling this stuff one-by-one can be helpful when bisecting.
<another|> ah
<elenril> I'd have preferred the reverse as well, but I'm in the minority
<Lynne> another|: ask philipl to tell you about all the nightmares of crystalhd cards
<Lynne> afaik they were only used on mobile devices, bundled as a minipcie card
<elenril> orly
<Lynne> only outputted 422, even if input was 420, badly
<elenril> I thought they were for broadcast stuff
<another|> nah. my need for nightmares is filled
<Lynne> had corruptions around the borders of the frame so hacks were needed to get rid of them
<Lynne> they were used in the short-ish amount of time before intel got proper hwaccels on laptops and HD video started being hard on CPUs

<mkver> jamrial: If deprecations don't require a minor bump, does actual removal require one?
<elenril> a major one, no?
<mkver> I shall bump major again? Fine by me.
<elenril> why again?
<mkver> See xvmc patch on ML.
<jamrial> no, don't bump anything
<jamrial> mkver: deprecations dont require a bump because they don't change the API. it's just adding warning
<jamrial> removal of course does need a bump because it's a break
iive has joined #ffmpeg-devel
<mkver> But then the removal of something like a header changes API.
<mkver> Which means I would need to bump something.
<mkver> But well... nevermind.
<jamrial> not in this case since it's happening immediately after the major bump
<elenril> the API in question is not supposed to exist anymore, so it's more of a bugfix than an API break
<mkver> There's already an after-bump patch in matroskadec.c
<jamrial> it doesn't matter

<rajivharlalka> Hi, I am a first time contributor and tried submitting a patch over the mailing list, I believe that my patch hasn't been reached as I cannot see it on the patchwork website. I use the git format-patch as specified in the documentation to create an eml file and used Thunderbird to send the mail. What could be issue there.

<mkver> jamrial: Can you replace the hdr10tags-both.mkv by https://0x0.st/H7Cl.mkv ?
<jamrial> mkver: what's the difference?
<mkver> I added rotation metadata (of the type that our muxer doesn't write), an attachment and added further tags that our muxer does not write (in one case, that our demuxer does not handle properly).
<rajivharlalka> @mkver: Oh, I couldn't find my patches on the patchwork hence got worried a bit. Thanks for the response.
<mkver> jamrial: It also serves as sample for issue https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ticket/7549.
<mkver> (This could be fixed by exporting the segment title with "title" and the edition title via "TITLE", but this would probably not survive the dozens of av_dict_copy which by default don't distinguish between them on the way with the FFmpeg cli.)
