<rwmjones> so far the PC I specced out will cost over £1,900 ...
<davidlt[m]> rwmjones: have specs to share?
<rwmjones> ASUS PRIME X670-P WIFI - PCIe 4.0, 3x M.2, 2.5 GbE/WiFi 6
<rwmjones> AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, Zen 4, 16 Cores, 32 Threads, 4.5GHz, 5.7GHz Turbo
<rwmjones> (note not X3D)
<rwmjones> Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX XT - 360mm Liquid Cooler
<rwmjones> 64GB (2x32GB) Corsair Vengeance 5600MHz
<rwmjones> (no GPU)
<rwmjones> Corsair RM750e, Modular, 80PLUS GOLD
<rwmjones> 2TB SSD + 2TD HDD
<rwmjones> + they will build and burn it in
<davidlt[m]> Two things (probably).
<rwmjones> + case
<davidlt[m]> ASUS got the most heat regarding exploding CPUs. They seem to be the worst.
<davidlt[m]> IIRC (double check me) they not only kill CPU, but also the motherboard.
<rwmjones> so the "exploding CPUs" thing only applies to x3d??
<davidlt[m]> There was the whole thing that installing Beta BIOS (that solves killing CPUs) was voiding your warranty too.
<davidlt[m]> If possible got for 6000MT/s memory, that's the sweet spot for AMD.
<davidlt[m]> Anything above doesn't make sense.
<davidlt[m]> and I am not a fan of water cooler :)
<rwmjones> yeah the DDR5 selections that scan.co.uk didn't offer anything faster, unclear why
<davidlt[m]> If pump dies, the whole thing stops.
<rwmjones> it's an AIO though, my last one is still going strong after 4 years
<rwmjones> I'm not even sure if they have a pump .. I thought they used heat pipes
<davidlt[m]> It's AIO, it must have a pump.
<davidlt[m]> I would avoid ASUS. Seems to the worst right now.
<davidlt[m]> Oh, and make sure your motherboard has ability to flash BIOS without a CPU.
<thefossguy> I would go with AsRock Taichi for the x670 platform
<thefossguy> They have improved a lot + “unofficial” ECC support
<thefossguy> I’m a sucker for ECC
<davidlt[m]> I was thinking about X670E Steel Legend IIRC
<davidlt[m]> And it's quite cheap too.
<thefossguy> <davidlt[m]> "There was the whole thing that..." <- That has been addressed. The notice was the default notice for all beta BIOSes and this is a special case. They forgot to change it lol
<davidlt[m]> They did it, but took a long time.
<rwmjones> the system builder I'm using are only offering asus motherboards (for AM5)
<thefossguy> Steel Legend is good too, haven’t seen it’s reviews from that many people
<davidlt[m]> After multiple videos from major YouTubers, etc. dropping ASUS.
<thefossguy> rwmjones: As in a third party assembler?
<davidlt[m]> There is also X670E PG Lightning
<davidlt[m]> Both of these also support Thunderbolt 4 via additional card.
<davidlt[m]> But no video under TB4.
<davidlt[m]> They do have AGESA 1.0.0.7 which provides support for 24 and 48 GB DIMMs too.
<davidlt[m]> And BIOS Flash Back support.
<rwmjones> thefossguy: not sure what you mean, but yes they will assemble it
<davidlt[m]> But there should be AGESA 1.0.0.9 late this month that solves CPU blowing up issues.
<thefossguy> rwmjones: That's exactly what I meant. i.e. a third party assembles it for you and ships the PC to your address.
<thefossguy> In that case, I wouldn't worry about the Asus issue since I would be covered by the assembler's warranty for this
<rwmjones> that one, yes
<thefossguy> And you can easily point this as a known issue if it were to happen
<thefossguy> Though, hopefully, it doesn't happen. Downtime is expensive
<davidlt[m]> It's not likely to happen fast on non-3D parts.
<rwmjones> yeah they're local & I've used them many times and they often raise compatibility issues or potential problems when building things, so I don't think it's going to be a problem
<davidlt[m]> It would be years before CPU degrades.

<davidlt[m]> Almost done with KF5 5.106.0 update
<davidlt[m]> There is a new stable kernel 6.3.4.
<davidlt[m]> I like my brain doing random things. I just hit super key, then type xeon, and hit enter.
<davidlt[m]> It opened a Firefox window with Xeon Phi pictures :D
<davidlt[m]> And yet I have no idea why I wrote "xeon".

<thefossguy> It do be like that
<thefossguy> I’ve ended up on apple.com looking at the perfect iPad to buy. Just to realise later, “Why do I need one?”
