<Guest60> my beaglebone black is not connecting to my network
<Guest60> can someone help with this?
brook has joined #beagle
<jfsimon1981> Hi, is it on ethernet RJ45 and do you have a router/dhcp server ?
<jfsimon1981> If so it should aquire an IP. If on USB it should get 192.168.7.2 or something like this.
<Guest60> i am just plugging it in to the ethernet port and it says no network
<jfsimon1981> ok you have a monitor and keybord attached right
<Guest60> no
<jfsimon1981> RJ45 port leds lit up ?
<Guest60> what is the RJ45 port?
<jfsimon1981> the beagle board ethernet port
<Guest60> yes they light up and stay solid
<jfsimon1981> green/yellow LEDs should be on
<jfsimon1981> ok
<jfsimon1981> You plugged to what ?
<Guest60> into my router
<jfsimon1981> ok it should aquire an IP address from the router
<Guest60> it doesn't
<jfsimon1981> how do you ckeck it ?
<Guest60> there is an OLED screen attached to a controller board
<jfsimon1981> yes that's what i said a monitor of some sort.
<Guest60> sorry i'm very new to this
<jfsimon1981> Do you have a keybord attached to bbb ?
<jfsimon1981> If so you can go to a console and get more info from there.
<jfsimon1981> For example run "ifconfig"
<Guest60> no the controller only has 4 buttons to control the OLED
<jfsimon1981> one second
<jfsimon1981> Yellow light should be solid, green light might blink from time to times
<jfsimon1981> Means it listens on the network.
<Guest60> i haven't seen the green light blink
<jfsimon1981> You can also connect to the router and see if it has addressed it an IP.
<Guest60> even if i don't have the BBB plugged in to the network it still gets an IP address, but it doesn't show up anywhere on my network when i have it plugged in
<jfsimon1981> Usually they have a web page and display connected clients.
<Guest60> i tried that last night and it was not showing up
<jfsimon1981> It might get a dummy address, though it needs to acquire from DHCP from the router
<Guest60> ok, where do i go from here?
<jfsimon1981> I'd do an ethernet wire disconnect/reconnect and check the activity on LEDs first, something should blink.
<jfsimon1981> Upon connecttion the green one blinks.
<Guest60> i've tried that. i've disconnected it numerous times
<jfsimon1981> Won't get solid unless it doesn't physically discuss.
<jfsimon1981> Yes check the green light is what i mean.
<Guest60> i know. still nothing
<jfsimon1981> That tells you if if discuss (green blinks).
<jfsimon1981> So now you know if blinks or stays solid upon connection.
<jfsimon1981> If it's solid there's a hardware issue.
<jfsimon1981> Cable or whatever related to physical link.
<Guest60> so maybe the port isn't connecting to the BBB?
<jfsimon1981> Again when you disconnect, reconnect, is gren led solid or blink a bit, just the moment it lights up and seconds afterwards ?
<Guest60> no it is solid
<jfsimon1981> ok
<jfsimon1981> bit strange. Then it's probably physical link issue.
<Guest60> ok. is there a way to connect it differently?
<jfsimon1981> Not on BBB
<jfsimon1981> on your router perhaps.
<Guest60> i mean can i use USB?
<jfsimon1981> Link or configuration on the router.
<jfsimon1981> On a different port in there.
<Guest60> not sure what you mean by that
<jfsimon1981> The cable might go to another port in your router perhaps
<jfsimon1981> Anyway you should get blinking LEDs for a DHCP transaction, tha'ts for sure.
<jfsimon1981> Try connecting the router end of your cable in a different port.
<Guest60> still nothing
<jfsimon1981> You're better to plug a USB keyboard and screen on BBB, login to the console and work from here.
<jfsimon1981> You'll be able to read network status with "ifconfig"
<Guest60> how do i plug a screen into it?
<jfsimon1981> You can also do that if you wire with USB to a computer, ssh client to the beagleboard at its local address which should be 192.168.7.2 from memory.
<jfsimon1981> micro hdmi.
<Guest60> ok. i'll have to get a USB then
<Guest60> all i have is USB C and Mini USB
<jfsimon1981> I think it's a mini usb right.
<jfsimon1981> It's side by side with ethernet port.
<Guest60> sorry i have micro and i need mini
<Guest60> all i really need to do is access a program that is already on the BBB and make some changes. I was previously doing that via network
<Guest60> but if i can accomplish that with USB that would be fine too
<jfsimon1981> you can
<Guest60> so if i connect with USB and go to the 192.168.7.2 or whatever, that should get me there?
<jfsimon1981> it should
<jfsimon1981> I thin .7.2 or .7.6, somewhere close from this.
<Guest60> ok i'll get a cable and try that. if it doesn't work, i'll be back
