Xogium: I added support for ARMv7M back in the days on a machine with 4 MiB of RAM. That was indeed not very useful. But there are systems with more RAM that should be able to do sensible stuff.

ukleinek: interesting. I struggled with the stm32f769 dev kit which has got a full 16 MiB. I couldn't even run the standard busybox config from buildroot, had to pick the minimal one because otherwise I had not even enough memory to log in
<ukleinek>
Xogium: I had to use an XIP kernel and init=/bin/sh. The SoC (efm32) only has 128 kiB of RAM, so I had to run Linux in the memory that was supposed to hold the framebuffer data :-)
<Xogium>
ahh yes, XIP
<Xogium>
I tried to implement this... Well, more like, make use of XIP, since I can't code anything good
<Xogium>
I got u-boot spl to XIP u-boot second stage, but u-boot itself couldn't XIP the kernel, lacking the required code to make it possible I think
<Xogium>
kernel would then run from the internal flash, and since I didn't get XIP for userspace neither... Well. No using the nice 64 MiB flash chip, even if I had added support in the dt
<Xogium>
interesting ! Hehe yet another software from pengutronix I've not heard of before. Is it, hum, better documented than the distro build tool they made ? The name ran away from me for some reason
<Xogium>
mind you, I'm merely interested in seeing if I could go further with the idea, only because it's a fun challenge for me personally
<Xogium>
:D

Xogium: geckoboot is part of a BSP that makes use of ptxdist. geckoboot isn't documented at all (apart from some code comments), so ptxdist should win that race :-)
<Xogium>
holy damn, okay
<Xogium>
oh well

<arnd>
to my best knowledge, the last serious deployments of NOMMU Linux machines were in 2017, and my plan is to suggest dropping support for ARMv7-M in 2027, with the expectation that the amount of bloat from 10 years meant that all of the existing machines stopped getting kernel updates at that point
<Xogium>
right. I mean no matter how hard you try to keep things tiny, there's a point where it's just not possible
<arnd>
there are still NOMMU targets on other architectures (m68k/coldfire, riscv/k210, sh/j2, sh/sh72xx, xtensa/esp32), which are in a similar state, and I don't want to get involved too much there but expect there will be pressure to remove those once the arm stuff is gone
<robmur01>
rfs613: "(___ptrval___)" is what you get before the hashing is initialised - when that happens is somewhat asynchronous since it depends on RNG entropy (see fill_ptr_key())
<robmur01>
after that point you should then get consistent hashed values
<Xogium>
:/ kind of sad though... But code must keep moving on
