<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> It seems that mainline is usable on rk3588. I'm going to join this party after finishing my class thesis this week.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @amazingfate it is... I'm running it on 2 units here
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> (headless of course) but the mainline kernel has been updated quoite a bit... Note still most rk3588s won't work (including Khadas Edge2)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> I'm going to try gpu and vpu.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> Will you try to implement hantro to rk3588s?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> I suppose currently just av1 decoding is mainlined
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <monkablyat> channeling your inner Tony's and join the pancsf complain party sounds like fun for me as well
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> I guess rk3588 is still using hantro g1 for 1080p decoding. Going to check it.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @efectn I assume you are talking vendor kernel?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> No
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Mainline I've yet to get any working reports of RK3588S yet
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> only RK3588
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> Av1 is available on mainline
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> S is missing too much dts
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> Both rk3588, rk3588s are mainlined
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> not that I was told
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Not as of last week
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> It will never be like the vendor dts
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> It wasn't even bootable
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> Which board are you using?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Khadas Edge2
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> which is I'm sure behind
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> Yeah its dts is incomplete
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> Opi5 is bootable
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> ah
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I'm surprised for a company with such good hw engineering to have such slow sw engineering
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <monkablyat> They are all chillin on the mind dock
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> haahaa
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I would be tempted if I had a desktop
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> but I have "0" desktop/stationary computers
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I've been laptop since 2013
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <monkablyat> Laptop is cool, I also have one, but in most cases where I could use the laptop, I remember that I don't even have it with me
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Stock as in, only using these commands described here:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @monkablyat I am always on the move in and out of the house so laptops are just more effective
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <monkablyat> True
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> @tenkawa42 since you have 2 units, did you ever have flawless youtube 4K 60fps playback on armbian?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> @tenkawa42 since you have 2 units, did you ever have flawless youtube 4K 60fps playback on armbian on RK3588?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I don't use graphics
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> mine are headless servers
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> What are you running on them?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Custom build
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> of Debian
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I mean, what server stuff?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Just stuff needed to do distributed builds (distcc, etc)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> You got me lost there, but never mind 😛
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Hoped it would be something interesting, as I bought 3 😛
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> (bought them for kinda light desktop use, but down the line, they will surely be used for something server related sooner or later)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> RK3588 is amazing performance-wise, would be great if it had real PCIE slots, to do some proper server stuff
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Does anyone know what the status is on video-acceleration for OPi5? 😦
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <.manofthesea> Hey, there are still updates for helios64?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <.manofthesea> That's cool.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> They should be the same, they share the same kernel, same chromium and mpp debs from my ppa. Compare chromium settings if you get different performance.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> `cat /proc/mpp_service/sessions-summary` to see if vpu is used when playing video. Compare `chrome://gpu` to see any differences.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I quickly checked `chrome://gpu` before, and they are identical in upper part... Some useless stuff in lower parts are maybe different here and there (like command line args, but again, useless args I think..)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Check `XDG_SESSION_TYPE` and `Ozone platform`. Command line args are important, try using the same chromium args.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Doing it now, first that `sessions-summary`
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> The browsing also feels smoother on that github ubuntu distro....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> I've been running chromium on armbian gnome wayland for a long time, which is working fine.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Gotcha.... `sessions-summary` is empty on my Armbian OPi5
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> While on ubuntu github distro, its occupied
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I did only these commands on a FRESH installes Armbian
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I did only these commands on a FRESH installed Armbian
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> Are you using wayland with gnome?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> How to tell? Everything is stock, freshly installed
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> In settings it says Wayland, yes
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> In Settings>About it says Wayland, yes
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> If it says wayland in the settings menu then you are using the correct desktop and display manager.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Also there Graphics = Mali G610 (Panfrost)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Did you upgrade your system?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Only these commands
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Do `apt dist-upgrade`
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I did
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Before I flashed 3 times, I always did upgrade first, then dist-upgrade (like in old times?)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> But this flash, only dist-upgrade
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Then you have to dive into chromium logs to see anything related: `chromium-browser --enable-logging=stderr --v=1 > log.txt 2>&1`
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> But under ubuntu distro OPi5:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Also there Graphics = Mali-G610 (Panfrost) (EDIT: forgot '-')
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Are we all using the same Armbian 23.11.1 jammy?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Exactly this one from download page now: Armbian_23.11.1_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.160_gnome-amazingfated_desktop.img.xz
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Exactly this one from download page now: `Armbian_23.11.1_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.160_gnome-amazingfated_desktop.img.xz`
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> I flashed armbian long time ago, and keep updating system by apt. My system should be the same with that downloaded image.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Guess so 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Will my IP or anything like that be in that log file?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Try editing `/etc/chromium-browser/default` to:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I dont know if that would help, if it works on Ubuntu ... There must be something wrong on Armbian stock conf....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Np, go to sleep, we can continue some other time
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I can say to my very few friends that still look at me, that now I can also say that I know how to hack Chromium browser
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Cant figure out myself where you can extract that information from those lines
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Sorry, if this wakes you up, this is from Ubuntu:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Sleep tight my browser hacking friend 😆
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Your ubuntu's monitor is 4k@60 while armbian is 4k@120. I don't know if gpu can handle that high refresh rate.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> se we need to limit refresh rate somehow?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Just a guess. I don't have a monitor with that high rate.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> yeah, i know. Me neitheer
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> but this would explain the issue
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Tried it before you wrote
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Now im also trying to install all your packages from your repo, starting with "panfork-mesa" and I cant locate a single package out of that repo (but can see there are on launchpad.net/.......)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Im a little rusty in apt... Are your packages compiled for latest Armbian on that repo?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Scratch that, `apt info mali-g610-firmware` says that it is installed from that repo...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Just dont know why it cant find those other packages, or if I even need them
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Same story with the 2nd repo
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Video acceleration works for you?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> You can use a M.2 to PCIe adapter and plug in anything you like. What I use is a 6 x SATA to M.2 adapter. It is just normal PCIe gen3 4-lanes.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Did I read you started with amazingfated image? Then you don't have to install anything, it's all pre-installed. If not, use the amazingfated image. I've got VPU acceleration, but it just don't perform as well as JRiek his Ubuntu. I can do 4k30 no dropped frames, but 4k60 dropped frames and loading. Might be bandwidt related for me. Very slow internet.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I do have another problem that I'm curious if you have it. My chromium doesn't save credentials and I always have to re-login. Got it on all my RK3588 devices.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> We have confirmed with amazingfate 'user' that its not accelerated by vpu. Its falling back to software
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> So what you are seeing is CPU crunching 4K30, and struggling at 4K60
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> JRiek Ubuntu also feels smoother when loading/scrolling pages, no?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Amazingfate 'user' said there shouldnt be any diff between these 2 distros
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I know what user said. It's discord, I can see what you say.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Just wanted to steer you to the right path, you started wrong 😛
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I started wrong? Read again.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Its np, debugging is in progress if he wont forget
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I believe he has some package installed somewhere, where stock Armbian is missing
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> He's sleeping. Don't expect someone to do it for you. Do as much debugging as possible, try to find out what is the cause and then report.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Yes its np. I did already
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Debugging video acceleration on linux on Google brings you nowhere, because its always whole stack related, never only 1 bit
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> And this whole stack for OPi5 is like few 10 people on the whole planet that have the knowledge about
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> We have concluded that browser is seeing the GPU and its capabilities, but falling back to CPU crunching anyway
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> My next step was to try all the older armbian releases. But they are all Jammy. Should not make a diff after executing upgrade
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> So much, that tbh im afraid to ask if I can use anything else than preinstalled chromium and expect it to automagically work 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I mean, Brave is chromium based, but as much as I understand this whole video acceleration stack on linux, its still night and day difference
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I think its got to do with what it is compiled with .....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I think its got to do with what it is compiled with ..... Or how ....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> There is a way to watch it with mpv but I can't remember how it was. We used to have to do it that way.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> To watch local files?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Watch youtube video's accelerated. With MPV. Look at rk3399 media script. It should be explained there. Years ago that was the way to have best quality.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I understand you, that it is then possible somehow else... Isnt mpv cli?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Its not there anymore.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I dont want cli
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I mean, who would want to watch youtube in cli? And why would that be practical?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I'm not talking about cli.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Its np... I can wait...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Just check what it does.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I mean, read the code how it sends the video to mpv. It ain't rocket science.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> We have concluded that Chromium is seeing the GPU, what are you eyeing at with this extension that sends the link to mpv?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Wouldnt it be easier to just playback a local file?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Why a middle man in the chain?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I tell you there is a way to play youtube video's with mpv accelerated.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I understand. I will use Ubuntu distro then, if thats the only way.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Or try to make it work with normal Chromium.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Do what you want. It's Linux, free to do the what you want.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> You are not interested in playing back youtube videos like normal people do in Chromium?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I mean, if its possible?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Have you tried an older image from the archive? It used to work, now it doesn't...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Maybe Im wasting my time and everybody else's.... Im new to Armbian... I thought it was go-to desktop distro for normal people... Telling my 2 brothers to buy these OPi5's and put them on all their TVs was wrong thinking maybe.....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Not sure when it degraded. Might be together with another bug...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Would it make a diff after `dist-upgrade` if they are all Jammy?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> ARM SBCs are not desktop devices for "normal people". They are full of problems.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I understand that fully. Thats why we are here 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I use it but I'd use an x86 SBC if I had one that's as powerful and makes no noise.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> For local files all you need: topoftheline S905X4 for 35€ and flash CoreELEC
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> And nothing else
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> The only thing that is left, is video in a browser and general browsing performance. And this is where RK3588 steps in.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Or if it doesnt, we are all the way back to noisy and power hungry x86
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Or a chromecast
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> And what is the issue with JRiek his image if I may ask?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> What is interesting is that noone said anything about that Im using 'official documented way' of using Armbian on OPi5 that says there should be GPU acceleration (and it doesnt have it fully, atleast in Chromium)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Nothing. Personally would rather use a bigger distro
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Nothing. Personally would rather use a bigger distro and help it's community
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> https://www.armbian.com/orangepi-5/ here where it says `Enable 3D Acceleration (Ubuntu Gnome Jammy variant only):` it is clearly wrong
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> As I said, it used to work and now it doesn't. I by accident upgraded my Mekotronics R58 Mini image and broke chromium. So I'll probably reinstall the old image and try not to update chromium.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I knew it.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Ok so I need to wait
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Its always like that
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> In my 10 years of linux debugging, its always breakage somewhere in the way. Thats why I rather use a bigger distro
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Its really np
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I ofcourse checked forums, and few people that 'were' complaining, all solved it somehow, and all their fixes dont work anymore (for me atleast)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I ofcourse checked forums and google, and few people that 'were' complaining, all solved it somehow, and all their fixes dont work anymore (for me atleast)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Armbian is probably the biggest, but we are just a few people doing vollunteer work. We loose many talented people constantly. So we have to do with what we've got. I help around where I can, but I'm also not as skilled as many devs.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Understood, its np....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I could help, but Im no dev, so I dont know of what help I would be 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> There's tons of things, moderater, administartion, graphics design, web design, script writing, ...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> If all that could be done by others then the devs have time to focus on their task...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> You know what is also funny?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Official website with official images. And the links are all pointing to their gdrives which have over capacity downloads on them (iow expired links)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> OPi always were horrible at this. It is a wonder they still exist and are this big.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Im no hardware designing expert, but I thought to produce such a thing, it shouldnt be hard to host files on own or rented server?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I dont know, its funny for me
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> The joke is that Orange Pi used to call themselfves a "software company".
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> So they arent multi million dollar companies?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> They even stole the whole armbian project and replaced every mention of armbian with orangepi and that's their ubuntu...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Im new to this game then....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Depends on where the money comes from. But we are drifting off, better to go to offtopic. This is for Rockchip.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Just once last offtopic... So I have devices from a possibly not even a 1 million dollar company?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I'm in it for 8 years now. Seen a lot of weird things happen. But things got better, just not sure if it ever will be perfect.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> That's going into politics, you know what country they are from... They can sell under market price for a reason.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> @gospod13337 try this, its likely not every package is needed, but it works for me. Make sure you have the ppa installed.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Just googled, and the only thing I could find was a mention of <5M$.. first I was shocked, but now im proud to be in this special club of very few people 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> They sell most after Raspberry. But have the worst profit margin I'd guess. Outcompeting the others on price. Because they have money from another source...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> And providing as little support as possible too. But that's the way it goes with Chinese companies. It is hard to communicate behind the wall.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I then can say for sure, that I was and still am a complete newbie in these 'politics'
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Thank god for linux and open border internet
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Indeed. I know enough. I review these boards so got a lot of contacts. Always got to be careful what you say if you're talking to chinese. They are (probably) monitored.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I think like you would like to say that it was wrong that I bought these OPi5's?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> No.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Im feeding a wrong cause?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Well, that's up to you. I ain't got issue's with chinese. But some people have problems with it for political reasons.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I was thinking of buying some cheap x86, but x86 f***** me so much in the past years in this exact video acceleration thing, that I decided not to feed Intel/AMD anymore, and its time to switch to arm everywhere, and found out about this RK3588 and figured that OPi5 was the best among RK3588.....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I just reviewe the OPi5+ and think it's the best RK3588 hardware wise. About politics and money I don't judge...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Understood
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> OPi5+ was too expensive for me
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I'm waiting on a Intel N100 board to review, I'd like that to replace my RK3588 main desktop.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Theres customs tax over 150€ in EU
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I'm from Belgium, so I know...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> 6W x86?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Khadas will probably make a 3588 (not s) eventually ( and it will probably be really nice) but its going to likely be very very pricy
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Can't order from US or GB. But from Asia I most often haven luck not to have to pay.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> That 6w is bullsh!t.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> It can consume +30W. And even more when you OC it a little.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Im not touching anything with that low TDP in x86 space anymore (atom netbooks!!!)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> The TDP is base clock of I think 800Mhz. But that is never used...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Intel TDP means nothing.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I dont know... I need to check it later maybe.....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Im so pissed with x86 that I dont trust them anymore
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I have X1 carbon with i7-6600U, thats like 5-6years old... Its become an Atom netbook with all these mitigations after all these years
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> It needs to be ultra cheap, noiseless, and max 5V4A 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> X86 is good only with real desktop class 65W+ CPU & desktop class RAM
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I use arm because it's power efficient. In summer I travel with my bike with solar panels and power banks to power my arm devices. I watch movies, play games, do my desktop tasks, edit videos and upload them to youtube... All from my tent from where ever. Wouldn't be able to do it as well with x86.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Thats cool
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> All with this RK3588?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I used a RK3399 (Pinebook Pro) for most of that myself (on the road use on ny bike)
<DC-IRC>

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> So as he already knew I can relate
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> PBP also is my device lately, but need to repair it. Hope it"l work.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> At the moment I'm back using my X86 laptop because my PBP broke and I won't take my MBP on the bike
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Omg A laptop with this chip... Now this is something I would also buy
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I"d pay good money for that.
yang has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
yang has joined #armbian-rockchip
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Will try that tommorow, I wont forget dont worry.... Also googled some more atm and got to a post from October, that some people dont even have video acceleration in local files in VLC. So I guess I also need to try that first then, maybe even that is broken.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> @nicod_sbc if we can go back to politics, how can then that single guy JRiek produce such a distro then, that a bigger community cant, wheres the catch?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Why doesnt he join forces with Armbian?
<juri_>
politics. :)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> He's only focusing on rk3588 to my knowledge. Armbian does way more socs and vendors.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I don't know JRiek and no idea if he was at Armbian at one time. I bet he gets sponsored by some companies for the work he does, so armbian is his competition I'd guess.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> I wish, normally i just get sent random hardware with no context, even if i did not ask for it. But it keeps thing interesting, never know what is going to show up next lol
<DC-IRC>

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Are you jriek?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> Yeah
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Wth
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> lol, nice to know
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> So Im talking about you for hours, and the other guy was trying his best
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I worked on some "unique and odd" hardware that way in my early career....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Did you ever try Armbian or do you hate us?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I worked on some "unique and odd" hardware that way in my early career....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> My career is done now though so its just a fun hobby now....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I ran an ISP and they would periodcly have to have to send me new equipment to learn/test (I lived across the country)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I get way too many boards too but can't do much with many since I'm no genius dev that can make it work.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> I don't hate Armbian, its great, i started my own project for the Orange Pi 5 to learn as i'm still "new" in the arm development scene, then it kinda kept growing. I try to contribute to common Armbian efforts when it comes to kernel related tasks.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> I can only do with boards that have armbian or maybe jriek images.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I started out as a build dev (officially) ... that was an eye opener
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> This was decades and decades ago lol
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @spooky8086 You tested anything on Khadas Rockchip boards at all?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Primarily the Edge2
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> Nah, i asked for a dev kit but they never got back to me
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Ahh bummer
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Great little unit
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Just needs a kernel update kinda badly
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> My mind is blown for today:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> 1) a small chinese company is producing like the most powerful arm computer
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> 2) a Belgian guy has a whole portable workstation in a backpack running on solar
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> 3) some guy is solo developing a linux distro in a completely new field for him, in contrary what a bigger community cant
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> I think that was the first rk3588 i saw online, because its been out for quite a while right?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @gospod13337 2 of us have been doing #3 for the RPI since it came out
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Its the RPI Image builder
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <spooky8086> That project needs a lot more community love, its way better structured than my own 🤣
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> KEdge2 was my first. Haven't used it in a while. I do like it but its limited. For my on the road goals its perfect with a metal case.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> My first RJ3588....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> My first RK3588....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> I really like the Edge2's portability
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Linux is alway a work in progress...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> Yep... why I like it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <nicod_sbc> Linux is always a work in progress...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> I kinda lost my soul 5 years ago when my work on my startup all went to shit. I only consume technology, mostly, like normal people do, drink daily since then and still cant stop digging into new linux stuff because you solo people wont stop producing shit 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> How can I explain to someone 'normal' that there isnt a corporation behind OPi5 or atleast a group od people behind its software
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> Time for another beer I guess 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <gospod13337> The more you learn about linux, the less you really know it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <tenkawa42> @gospod13337 go start looking stuff up on wikipedia... I find it to be useful for that
