cr1901 changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <Lord_Nightmare> madeline: which dectalk? i didn't even know there was one for sale
<madeline> dtc01
<KitsuWhooa> great marketing
<KitsuWhooa> :p
<cr1901> Oh it was a tuxedo cat
<cr1901> not a white cat
<Lord_Nightmare> madeline: got a link to the auction?
<Lord_Nightmare> the finished one
<madeline> lost the link
<madeline> sorry
<Lord_Nightmare> https://www.ebay.com/itm/164895446749 i assume
<NiGHTS> Digital DTC01 DECtalk unit with user & program manuals | eBay
<Lord_Nightmare> wait WHAT THE FUCK
<NiGHTS> NEW Vintage DEC DTC01-AA Dectalk US English w/ Manuals Cables Digital Equipment | eBay
<Lord_Nightmare> FIFTY BUCKS? who the FUCK sold one of those for FIFTY BCUSK
<Lord_Nightmare> that's nuts
<Lord_Nightmare> they're worth around $300
<Lord_Nightmare> whoever sold that scammed themselves
<madeline> my broken one in ohio was $100 when i got it lol
<madeline> it needs recapped and new ROMs
<Lord_Nightmare> new roms? what ROM rev does it have?
<Lord_Nightmare> I have a dtc-01 with 2.0
<Lord_Nightmare> the 1.8 roms are also dumped
<Lord_Nightmare> theres two versions of 2.0 dumped, with the difference being the later ones have a newer dsp firmware, the 68k firmware is the same
<Lord_Nightmare> I'm looking for anyone with a really old dtc-01 which has pre-1.8 firmware
<Lord_Nightmare> supposedly at least one more firmware revision existed which has a nasty out of memory bug
<Lord_Nightmare> which was fixed in 1.8
<Lord_Nightmare> or so the rumor goes
<Lord_Nightmare> if you run a unit with the 1.8 dsp roms and 2.0 68k roms, it will clip like hell
<Lord_Nightmare> if you run a unit with the 2.0 dsp roms and the 1.8 68k roms, it will sound really quiet
<Lord_Nightmare> both versions of the 2.0 dsp roms behave the same; the later version has some debug stuff enabled which may be related to the DTC-03 and DTC-06 firmware
<Lord_Nightmare> er, DTC-07
<Lord_Nightmare> sorry
<Lord_Nightmare> DTC-06 is weird and obscure, and i know very little about it, supposedly it is pretty much the same as DTC-07, but where DTC-07 is an ISA bus interface card, DTC-06 is QBUS meant for a VAX
<Lord_Nightmare> it may even share the roms with DTC-07
<Lord_Nightmare> DTC-01 is the desktop dectalk, 68k based
<Lord_Nightmare> DTC-03 is the card-modem-cage dectalk, you could gang 8 of them together; it is 80186 based with the cpu under a metal hinged lid; i actually have a DTC-03 card cage and 8 cards for it, but the psu for the cage is bad and even after recapping i don't trust it
<Lord_Nightmare> DTC-07 is the Dectalk PC, there's two versions of the card; the older one uses DIP chips, the newer one uses PLCC chips. I have one of each, the firmware is not the same!
<Lord_Nightmare> DTC-08 is the Dectalk Express, an external serial unit, mostly used by speech disabled individuals. I have one of these with stock factory firmware, and I think I have one other with later firmware; these are annoying to dump since they have flash chips and could be upgraded via software... or bricked.
<Lord_Nightmare> and the flash chips they use for the firmware do not last forever
<Lord_Nightmare> DTC-03 and DTC-07 use an 80186 cpu; the dtc-03 has firmware for the cpu on the cards themselves; the dtc-07 requires the firmware to be uploaded from DOS onto ram on the card
<Lord_Nightmare> the memory map and setup of the two is very similar
<Lord_Nightmare> I'm trying to track down as many DTC-08 firmwares as i can, since dec released at least 5 or 6, and the updater disks for only 1 or 2 have survived
<Lord_Nightmare> the one i have with stock firmware is a rarity, that's super important to preserve
<Lord_Nightmare> later firmwares will give you a version code if you request it and will speak their firmware number
<Lord_Nightmare> the first one afaik doesn't do this, and mine behaves this way
<cr1901> I never got into DEC stuff really, and I don't have a good reason why... I was offered a VAX in 2011, which I turned down b/c past-me was a moron. Ahhh well...
