<andlabs> so what do I need for the side cutter technique
<andlabs> and why is there no just one simple technique, preferably with things I have on me
<andlabs> (do we even still have baking soda? hmmm)
<ejs> side cutters, you snip the capacitor about halfway down. then pull off the rubber stopper and desolder the two wires that stick up from the pads
<ejs> basically you're cutting the can in half, so that half stays on the board and half comes off
<ejs> then you pick out the bits that are left.
<ejs> you want to cut so that you are holding the cutters parallel to the two leads. if you go perpendicular, the cutters will squeeze the two electrodes towards each other which puts stress on the pads.
<ejs> can't find a good pic unfortunately. the mr. carlson's lab video is very popular but wrong/misleading
<andlabs> ok

<andlabs> ut still
<andlabs> what is the correct way to do what you described, and the correct tool to do it with?

<ejs> andlabs, something like this: https://www.fine-tools.com/side-cutters.html
<NiGHTS> Side cutters, end-cutting nippers
<ejs> the sharper, the better
<ejs> flush cut is ideal

<andlabs> ok
<andlabs> thanks
<andlabs> and I guess the other half of it is, isopropyl alcohol? baking soda? dishwasher? before? after? both? not sure which is best and what
<andlabs> and is there a video of that side cutter usage that you suggested that isn't bad like the mr carlson one?
<Ultrasauce> you want to minimize the amount of electrolyte goo kicking around before applying heat, and to remove the flux residue after soldering

<Ultrasauce> nothing to apologize for, I just want to empower you to give it a shot
<andlabs> (btw for those whow ere asking theo ther days things like this where my computer has a power regulation fault somewhere in it is one reason why having the logs available is useful, though I'm not the person who originally asked for htem)
<andlabs> or should I get one smaller or not heavy duty instead?
<NiGHTS> Amazon.com: Keiba Heavy Duty Wire Cutter Semi Flush: Arts, Crafts & Sewing
<Ultrasauce> probably lighter duty ones, my go to is this style https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087YYLKWH

<andlabs> ok
<andlabs> what makes me confused about the ones on amazon is that half of them are "diagonal"
<andlabs> diagonal side cutters
<andlabs> I guess
<andlabs> technically that can be correct logically????
<andlabs> now I just have to hope people make recapping kits for this thing or if I'm going to have to BOM this myself
<andlabs> I did buy CD32 cap kit from retro-bench but
<andlabs> a) I bought the non-solid-polymer ones before I realized they also sold solid polymer ones, oops
<andlabs> b) they no longe rsell caps anymore anyway
<andlabs> ah console5
<andlabs> does
<andlabs> that's the kit that retrohacks.net uses so I guess good
<andlabs> lol they even have one for the apple IIe card
<andlabs> I'm starting to wonder if these things actually are rare or not

<KitsuWhooa> I think a lot of people just have their bouncers connected and rarely check in
<cr1901> Well yes :P
<KitsuWhooa> and a few people were connected through matrix
<KitsuWhooa> I don't think that's set up here yet
<cr1901> sorear: Well #riscv has a lot more idlers... for 50 people, I can afford to nudge ~20 ppl who haven't migrated yet (if they're going to make accts at all here)
<cr1901> I wish I didn't like "number go up" so much
<sorear> definitely a lot of idlers. doesn't really bother me

<cr1901> sorear: #zig also got a decent chunk of members back... right now 110+ ppl in the Libera room
<sorear> something happen recently?
<sorear> i haven't dropped +m yet because i don't want to completely strand the people calling in from matrix
<sorear> and i have a naive hope the bridge will be added in the next few days
