<necrop75>
What GUI toolkit should i use to write an app for linux that work on ubuntu or mint or any major distribs without too much problem?
<necrop75>
in the gem i saw there is fxruby and mitten_ui which is GTK i think.
<necrop75>
foxtoolkit or GTK, anyone knows mittens_ui gem? works good?
<necrop75>
there is QT UI binding but only for windows, there used to be a linux version...
<necrop75>
i guess i'll try mittens_ui, cause GTK is more popular.

Shortstop: do you need to use rvm or is it possible to switch to rbenv? I give up on reading 1000 lines of rvm installation script, it makes no sens to me that an installation process requires so much code

RVM to me is something like the Ruby on Rails of ruby version managers.
<myappie>
im so proud to be the first backer of the project
<myappie>
its the future of webservers!
<myappie>
(currently trying to improve their logo)
<ox1eef_>
Nice. I think you should consider automating the README with a shell script. But certainly looks good.

ox1eef_: I'm happy for what RVM did for Ruby, but in some ways I wonder it's causing more issues than helping anymore.
<adam12>
Is it still being maintained I wonder? rbenv definitely has some great maintainers, but I cant' remember for RVM.
<adam12>
The analogy fits, IMHO.
<adam12>
myappie: sadly, seeing all that configuration just reminded me why I'd rather spin up Dokku.
<adam12>
Lazy adam is lazy.

<ox1eef_>
I haven't found a way to do reproducible builds on BSD besides with shell scripts. But I'd definitely prefer it over the zillion Linux variants out there.
<ox1eef_>
I'm not sure if RVM is being maintained or not. I gave up on it a long time ago. My personal favorite in that domain is chruby / ruby-install.
<myappie>
adam12: but the equivalent in linux configs would be twice the size, twice as messy and twice as insecure. there's no denying about that
<myappie>
i realize you got a lotta love for your OS so i'll leave it at that but
<myappie>
doesnt sound like you've even given it a try :/
<adam12>
myappie: I have no love for Linux. I've ran both OpenBSD and FreeBSD.
<adam12>
But how does your solution compare to wget https://dokku.com/bootstrap.sh && sudo DOKKU_TAG=v0.30.1 bash bootstrap.sh
<myappie>
i could easily write a bootstrap.sh script similar to yours
<adam12>
I found both OpenBSD and FreeBSD to require a ton more administration overhead.
<myappie>
not bash though, due to the security vulnerabilities
<myappie>
in what way?
<adam12>
Sucks, but I'd rather just spin up Debian, enable unattended upgrades, install Docker, and not think about it again.
<myappie>
i've noticed the opposite
<myappie>
cleaner startup scripts, cleaner daemons, less flooding of irrelevant info on the screen and in the logs
<adam12>
I just don't have energy to trailblaze. I'm not saying you shouldn't.
<myappie>
not to mention the peace of mind that comes with knowing you finally found the simplest solution there is
<adam12>
I'm sure I could find more if I dug around. I payed my dues.
<ox1eef_>
Take me to your leader xD
<myappie>
you see what happens when openbsd users come to ruby.. like jeremy evans.... that myapie guy... heck, maybe soon even samuel williams :D
<myappie>
openbsd has sysinstall which is also unattended upgrades, worth checking out. so simple you wonder how it's even possible.
<adam12>
I have an entire rack of servers. I don't want to babysit them.
<myappie>
ultimately i just want to join the two communities to give us all more brainpower
<ox1eef_>
I agree adam12 - docker is easier, but I think it comes down to having an interest in a system or not. And even enjoying it. Linux is mostly voodoo to me, but with BSD I feel like I can grasp the system and have documentation that explains things in simple terms.

Cool +1
<myappie>
he was up there with digitalocean and vultr but
<myappie>
he was being realistic (u have to go to war to beat them) and maybe a little psyched out about their extremely well-designed marketing campaigns and dedicated followers
<myappie>
i hope he picks up the battle axe again later down the line...
<ox1eef_>
Very few in the market offer native BSD support nowadays. I know of vultr, OpenBSD.amsterdam, and hertzner. That's all.
<adam12>
ox1eef_: I love knowing how the system works, but if I want to get anything done, I have to stay on the beaten path for some things. Sadly, that meant dropping BSD's for Docker/QEMU. It's definitely not perfect; I've lived through ipchains, iptables, and now we're onto nftables?? but there are some benefits, and since CentOS was eaten by IBM, I
<adam12>
just run Debian everywhere now. Less mental load.
<myappie>
yup
<adam12>
Dropping BSDs for something that can run Docker/QEMU, that is.
<myappie>
i've used debian for years myself, all the distros and all the various unix flavors
<myappie>
saying BSDs isnt fair though. freebsd and netbsd are 2nd class
<ox1eef_>
adam12: Understandable, but I think BSD has a market. It might be niche, although I think it exists.
<myappie>
i get the dockerargument though
<myappie>
ox1eef_: thats why im pressing on to redesign their site
<myappie>
i believe they can become much much bigger

#ruby has got to be the kindest, most generous and most tolerant place ive ever visited on irc
<ox1eef_>
It has had its phases. For a while you couldn't say "Thanks guys!".
<adam12>
Oof.
<adam12>
I'm enjoying the channel a lot more since it's become smaller less mainstream (vs ~2009 when I was here), and still find the conversation stimulating, but I miss some of the experiments/exploration that was happening.
<ox1eef_>
Agreed. Popularity is a double-edged sword.
<adam12>
I have a fascination with old Ruby web frameworks just because people did the most bizarre stuff in the earlier years. Its fun to look back and see every web action served over Drb (Mack framework), and other weird bits.

btw cani get your opinions on something, two sec

<adam12>
havenwood: Gday sir.
<ox1eef_>
