<somlo> hope this is not OT for this channel: I'm trying to (better) comprehend what's going on in the RocketChip (chisel) sources; Did a chisel tutorial a while back and sort-of kind-of was able to comprehend what's going on, and even sort-of kind-of make some small useful changes to the Rocket configuration .scala file :)
GenTooMan has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<somlo> but my grip on chisel was always tenuous at best, and now that I'm looking at it it's word salad once again
<somlo> what's a good way to learn (and then *remember* chisel)? Should I go one layer deeper and actually try to really learn Scala first ? :)
<somlo> I'm a c and verilog person, so I tend to like simple things where I can follow some thread of control in the source code, FWIW :D

<pbsds> Yeah
<pbsds> Or with some pragma stuff
<pbsds> Or are there any C libraries written that produce the wanted inline assembly?

<courmisch> well, ORC would be supposed to do it, but it does not support RV yet, forget RVP
davidlt has joined #riscv
<courmisch> and RVP is embeddedish, so probably something people would assembler for by hand anyhow

<pabs3> pbsds: also relevant, but probably doesn't yet support RISC-V https://github.com/simd-everywhere/simde/ (automatic porting between various SIMD variants)

<vagrantc> pabs3: pretty sure it supports riscv64, at least on debian, as i recently patched a package to use it and it builds on riscv64 just fine: https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=lcsync&suite=experimental
<vagrantc> simde, that is
<pabs3> it has plain-C fallbacks for every x86/ARM/etc SIMD instruction it supports, so that is likely why it builds
<pabs3> I mean not sure if it supports the RISC-V SIMD instructions, either for translating from or to.
<vagrantc> ah, yes.
<jjido> How is the SIMD extension doing,
<jjido> ?

<pabs3> vagrantc: btw, did you also add FMV or similar? I think just building against plain simde means you use the C fallbacks https://wiki.debian.org/InstructionSelection
<vagrantc> pabs3: didn't, but upstream will change their approach entirely soon so not worth more changes
<pabs3> what do they plan to do?
<vagrantc> pabs3: don't recall exactly, but it obviated the need for anything like simd
aerkiaga has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
* vagrantc is reminded to nudge upstream
<pabs3> hmm, ok. sounds like they are going to write their own fallbacks
