Funny how linus said x86 was his favorite in a yt vid
<qwestion>
> chuck moore said the i386 was the worst architecture he ever worked with

qwestion: Probably he suffered too hard from the castrated version of the real processor he had before? (68008 ;-)

"brand loyalty" - ie. in this case the first CPU you ever used might remain your favourite for life. For me, that's the 6502 but RISC based thingies come a close second.
<la_mettrie>
(6502 also for linus)

<gordonDrogon>
there may well be "political" pressure on Linus - i386 is what he developed Linux on and he worked for transmeta developing (presumably) the x86 core for it, so who knows.
<gordonDrogon>
some good points too - but I wonder how many x86 instructions the compilers actually use? I worked out in my very domain specific thing I'm using just 29 instructions in my RISC-V implementation.
<sorear>
"instructions" is a fairly ill-defined conceptg
<sorear>
(and a lot of them will only show up with FP or vector code)

qwestion: maybe Linus was comparing the i386 to its successors and Moore to its predecessors? or maybe they just have different value systems
<muurkha>
like, Moore was comparing i386 to the Unicode 1108, and Linus was comparing it to Tensilica or something
<muurkha>
in that post he's comparing the i386 to PowerPC and AMD64, and the values he states are that "for the masses" is the only part that really matters and performance is good
<muurkha>
Moore evidently never gave two farts about the masses, and his level of concern for performance is not that high either

I can't evaluate what Moore meant since I don't have a source for the claim
<sorear>
and the post (OP) is comparing to ia64, not amd64; amd64 isn't even mentioned until the last two
