cfbolz changed the topic of #pypy to: #pypy PyPy, the flexible snake https://pypy.org | IRC logs: https://quodlibet.duckdns.org/irc/pypy/latest.log.html#irc-end and https://libera.irclog.whitequark.org/pypy | the pypy angle is to shrug and copy the implementation of CPython as closely as possible, and staying out of design decisions

<Hodgestar> mattip: Reading the BPO issue, it doesn't seem like CPython really made an explicit decision about the change in the __builtins__ semantics at all, beyond noting that there were changes and the behaviour was complicated. I think asking for the situation to be clarified is a good idea.
<Hodgestar> mattip: I don't think PyPy should rush to do anything specific beyond "making stuff work for people".
<mattip> there is a failing lib-python test on the py3.10 branch. I don't know whether to mark it "cpython-only " or to fix PyPY

<lessshaste> mattip, sadly I am a pip only person
<mattip> lesshaste: then please ask on the scipy issue tracker that they release wheels for PyPy
<mattip> so far there has not been much desire to do that, so you personally have to compile from source
<mattip> but maybe if people started asking for it, they would reconsider

<lesshaste> Dejan, go on??
<Dejan> (reaction to the "I am a pip only person")
<lesshaste> mattip, ah ok. How would I argue that this would be a good thing for them?
<lesshaste> mattip, I noticed https://github.com/MacPython/scipy-wheels
<mattip> you are a scipy user who also uses pypy, and would like a wheel
<lesshaste> Dejan, ah :)
<mattip> scipy-wheels should be archived, they now use cibuildwheel to build wheels
<lesshaste> mattip, sorry do you mean it's all out of date?
<mattip> I mean it is no longer used at all. This issue should be migrated to scipy/scipy
<lesshaste> mattip, thanks. I also found https://github.com/scipy/scipy/issues/17508
<lesshaste> it looks slightly out of date now sadly
<mattip> right, that repo also should be archived
<arigato> cfbolz: sorry, I'm only checking this channel from time to time and I notice now you said PyPy was turning 20 years old! great
