<beneroth> hi Iacob
<Iacob> Hi
<beneroth> you're new here? or is just my bad memory? :D
<Iacob> yes, I'm new here
<beneroth> welcome then =D
<beneroth> how did you manage to find us? :D
<abu[m]> Hi lacob, welcome! :)
<Iacob> refresh the channel list and search "lisp", then I found this channel
<beneroth> you're a seasoned lisper or beginner in lisp in general?
<Iacob> I'm a clojure user
<beneroth> even within lisp communities, we are pretty niche and radical in some ways.
<beneroth> ah, cool. we have some, I believe :)
<abu[m]> I see, great!
<beneroth> if you have any questions, be it technical or conceptual, just ask
<beneroth> we're a tiny but strong community, and we've several people using picolisp in their companies to make a living.
<beneroth> more info you can find on www.picolisp.com and https://software-lab.de/doc/index.html
<Iacob> I am looking for an alternative to perl :)
<Iacob> Then I feel that going back to lisp is the best choice
<beneroth> sounds fitting. picolisp is often used for cli scripting (when bash is not enough), and then mainly for database business applications
<abu[m]> right
<beneroth> perl is nice, but just too much of a write-only language, I believe
<beneroth> Iacob, in https://rosettacode.org/wiki/PicoLisp you can find many examples if you like to compare with other languages
<Iacob> I think I can start using picolisp by scripting a shortest-path algorithm
Iacob has quit [Quit: Iacob]
<abu[m]> Something like that?
<abu[m]> https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Dijkstra's algorithm#PicoLisp
<abu[m]> BTW, we now have a nice new blog: https://picolisp-blog.hashnode.dev
<beneroth> abu[m], he left at 11:49. Do you get join/leave notifications from IRC in matrix?
<abu[m]> Oh, strange! Usually I get, but now the last was yesterday
<abu[m]> I sap aw- joining and leaving
<beneroth> you have aw- on your IRC friend list? maybe that is a difference
<beneroth> friend online notification vs. channel join/leave notification
<abu[m]> Yes, @aw-
<abu[m]> Where does the list come from? I have not initialized it
<abu[m]> Perhaps tankf33derdid
<abu[m]> The list has 52 entries
<beneroth> in IRC is a command for it. not sure how it works in the matrix bridge
<beneroth> maybe then it's not exactly IRC friend list but users which are also registered in the matrix channel
<abu[m]> Or perhaps at the moment the bridge was started first
Regenaxer has joined #picolisp
<Regenaxer> Hmm, as long as the issue with status notifications is not solved, I'd better stay here too ;)
<beneroth> welcome back :P
<Regenaxer> :)
<beneroth> welcome to spam from people with bad connections :D
<Regenaxer> uh, yeah
rob_w has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<Regenaxer> Hmm, rob_w is in the list, but his quitting was not signalled to matrix
<aw-> hi guys
<aw-> still here ;)
<Regenaxer> Cheers aw-!
<aw-> tsunami warning just now in Miyagi and Fukushima
<aw-> big earthquake just hit
<aw-> anyways, what's all this matrix stuff?
<aw-> do i need a new client?
<Regenaxer> Oh! But you are still in Okinawa, right?
<Regenaxer> No, matrix is separate. I use it as a WhatsApp replacement
<Regenaxer> And there is a bridge to this irc channel
<Regenaxer> So I can use only the matrix client
<Regenaxer> But besides this, we made also a dedicated matrix (non-IRC) channel for PicoLisp
<Regenaxer> @picolisp:7fach.de
<Regenaxer> A bit redundant ;)
<abu[m]> Hmm, so I'll stay with this one. Simply more convenient, as I get notified without needing the ssh session to my server being open
<Regenaxer> Let's see :) bbl
Regenaxer has left #picolisp [#picolisp]
<abu[m]> Oops, above matrix channel is wrong! Correct is #picolisp:7fach.de
<beneroth> [OT] yeah big earth quake: https://twitter.com/LastQuake/status/1504109169498017809
<beneroth> aw-, stay safe!
<abu[m]> My daughter also noticed (in Tokyo)
<aw-> yes still in Okinawa, no shaking here.
<aw-> i'll need to look into Matrix, never used it
<abu[m]> Good idea! :)
<aw-> i hope there's a linux CLI client for it
<aw-> i dont want to use JS/browser-based chat
<abu[m]> You could even set up your own homeserver on a Raspi
<abu[m]> There seems a plugin for Weechat, but I have not investigated
<abu[m]> razzy also asked for a pure text client
aw- has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<beneroth> aw- the default client is electron/NPM based, this is my biggest counter point, too.
<beneroth> abu[m], pure text = IRC. no need to reinvent :)
<beneroth> ofc for 1:1 chats stronger encryption E2E is nice. but for public reachable channels TLS is good enough.
<abu[m]> Yeah, but family wants videos and pictures and stuff
<abu[m]> The video chat in element is excellent btw
<beneroth> nice
_whitelogger has joined #picolisp
<abu[m]> Hard to compare. But wors very reliably
<beneroth> ok. I guess they're for different use cases :)
<abu[m]> Yes, element is 1:1 only
<abu[m]> For groups they start Jitsi
<beneroth> aw- just was we talked about it xD
