Good morning :) .. I have a question about this sentence on the PilOS operating system page (It can boot from a device like an USB-Stick, and also uses only that stick's flash memory for mass storage) how does it use the flash memory as storage? because as far as I know (dd if=image of=drive) will occupy the whole drive without leaving any
<Hunar>
space
<Regenaxer>
Good morning Hunar!
<Regenaxer>
Not sure, who wrote that? I don't remember
<Hunar>
So is there a way to transfer files to the operating system?
<Regenaxer>
IIRC it worked :)
<Regenaxer>
Try it!
<Regenaxer>
It worked good in Qemu
<Regenaxer>
Also on my Acer noteboo
<Regenaxer>
And it did not touvh the internal HD
<Hunar>
(it worked) which part do you mean :) the usb storage?
<Regenaxer>
all
<Regenaxer>
Try it
<Regenaxer>
Sorry, but in the morning I'm always in a hurry. I can't start digging in old stuff :)
<Hunar>
I tried it yesterday, first I had a problem because my laptop's keyboard is broken I use a bluetooth keyboard (Which is the worst thing ever, at least buy a dongle) then brought a wired external keyboard which didn't work, pressing any key would either print 2 or 3 unprintable characters or print the letter surrounded by unprintable characters.. so
<Hunar>
I used qemu again .. but the storage I'm not understanding, how can I transfer files to the usb if I burned the image into it?
<Hunar>
The OS works, I dont have problems with that.. I'm just confused about the storage, wouldn't (dd if=image of=drive) make the flash drive read only?
<Regenaxer>
I don't remember. But it created a kind of file system using the Pil DB, so it worked
<Regenaxer>
flash read only depends on how you mount it
<Regenaxer>
PilOS does not mount, it is already open
<Regenaxer>
(dd if=image of=drive) is when *creating* the stick
<Hunar>
I'll try it again then :) when I get home .. thanks
<Regenaxer>
Good to know that there is hardware still around that has a more or less standard BIOS
<Regenaxer>
PilOS uses the BIOS, but most machines don't support many BIOS features any longer
<Hunar>
T
<Hunar>
my computer is old and is falling apart, I keep telling myself don't spend money when this still works
<Regenaxer>

Hunar: i can recommend a "cheap" $50 arm64 SBC for general computing
<aw->
you'll need to fight with it a bit, but it's more than enough for hacking around on Linux things, picolisp, etc
<aw->
it's a relatively inexpensive way to get a "new computer"

Thanks aw- :) I'll try if I could find it in my city, I once wanted a raspberry pi but I could only find expensive ones

yeahhh raspberry pi are so expensive

Which is a shame, because I have about 8 projects that could do with more pi

I don't get what people find so exciting about these thingies (Raspberry Pis). You may now ban me from this channel.
<alexshendi>
Apple pie has more computing power.
<beneroth>
alexshendi, why ban? plz stay
<beneroth>
alexshendi, I guess, maybe the lack of computing power is a feature.. no spectre & co
<alexshendi>
beneroth: Cancel Culture!
<beneroth>
in which community did you hang around, dear alexshendi ? :D
<beneroth>
I'd like to keep the old hacker IRC culture here.. if something is shit, call it so, and nobody cares who is a dog
<beneroth>
we can always call it a safe space for autistic folks
<beneroth>
alexshendi, I would think raspberry might be easier approachable for people who are not into electronics? I guess it's easier for you to get to interesting hardware or handle it?

<Nistur>
I don't use the power of most modern machines, so I like the small form factor, and flexibility of the raspberry pi
<Nistur>
I have a few things built on random pis, and my PC setup (although it's not set up like this right now) is built on... 4(ish) of the things... which, while I could do it with multiple full size PCs is somewhat overkill for what I need, and I couldn't really do it with one PC
<Nistur>
oh, and I have a pi running one of my 3D printers
<Nistur>
again, I _could_ use a full PC for that, but it's overkill for what I need
<Nistur>
so yeah, the reason I love SBCs in general, and specifically the Raspberry Pi, is that I have a _lot_ of relatively low power use cases, and they make it very easy to set them up
<aw->
Nistur: octoprint?
<Nistur>
aw-: indeedly doo
<Nistur>
I don't have anything similar on my resin printer :(
<Nistur>
my main problem with that is, it's using a Pi0W, in USB gadget mode to emulate the USB drive plugged into the printer, meaning it's wifi only. I currently don't have wifi in my shed, so I would _ideally_ want an ethernet port

<aw->
oh yeah when I had my office/lab/shed built i made sure they wired some fiber optics to the house haha
<aw->
so i've got a tiny wifi AP in there now
<aw->
fiber is "safe" outdoors, and you can wire it a really long distance
<aw->
Nistur: i'm also running octoprint but on a rock64.. works fine
<Nistur>
my shed isn't that far away
<Nistur>
so I just have shielded ethernet going down to it
<Nistur>
I should get a wireless AP in there too
<Nistur>
but I'd prefer to have any machines wired if possible
<aw->
+1 wired
<aw->
i only use wifi for the mobile devices haha
<aw->
shielded ethernet running outside the house?
<Nistur>
the weatherproof stuff
<Nistur>
big thick black coating, rather than the relatively thin grey stuff
<Nistur>
not shielded, sorry
<aw->
oh ok
<aw->
as long as it's not a lightning conductor ;)
<aw->
maybe safer to pass it through some PVC tubing as well.. protect it from animals who could chew through it
razzy has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]

or maybe some flexible corrugated tubing, that stuff is awesome

I have some of it at floor level, which is in PVC tubing, but it's also partially raised on the fence, and it's not in tubing there...
<aw->
ok!
<aw->
hey did you finish your penti yet?
<aw->
penti/chorded kb?
<Nistur>
yes and no. I am going to have to ponder some modifications to it
<Nistur>
MiniNisturette pulled off one of the wires, so I have to re-solder it, but that's not a big issue
<Nistur>
the bigger issue is, it works if I have it where I designed it, which is sitting next to me at seat height. I designed it thinking I'd use it while sitting on the bed, with the thing next to me... if I put it on a desk, raised up, then the angle makes it very tiring for my fingers to actually type on
<Nistur>
so yeah, I need to decide what to do about that
<aw->
oh i see.. so possibly a redesign
<aw->
maybe you can just print a support plate with legs
<aw->
so change the angle
<beneroth>
good point
<beneroth>
configuration
<aw->
or a kind of "holder" where you can rest your arm and hold the kb with minimal effort

OT, I have Oauth secured communication with server. I want get http page and submit data by POST method. I am thinking of using curl. Can picolisp handle it better?
alexshendi has joined #picolisp
<Regenaxer>
I often use curl in such cases too. It is fine I think
<Regenaxer>
PicoLisp is not good at sending POST via HTTPS
<Regenaxer>
(POST is possible via 'client', and GET / HTTPS via @bin/ssl, but for both there is no good way)
